Job Title: Staff Scientist
Location: Coralville, IA
Purpose Statement:
The Enzyme Development team is seeking a talented Staff Scientist with expertise in protein biochemistry to develop enzymes used in: Genome Editing, Gene Expression, Genotyping, Next Generation Sequencing and Synthetic Biology. This position is a hands-on, laboratory-based position in Coralville, Iowa.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to support and develop early research projects as well as be part of a dynamic and innovative team where they will contribute their knowledge and technical skills to the growth of IDT’s new product development pipeline. The candidate will be responsible for cloning, sequencing, optimizing upstream and downstream bioprocessing and final characterization of protein products. Ideal candidate should have prior exposure and or experience with: protein expression, operation of AKTA FPLC chromatography systems, various resins (affinity, IEX, HIC, mix-mode, SEC), tangential flow filtration, analytical HPLC, LC-MS spectral analysis, assay development, and enzyme kinetics.
The candidate will work alongside other team members to characterize purified proteins by measuring kinetic parameters such as enzyme activities and binding affinities using UV-VIS absorbance, fluorescence, chemiluminescence, circular dichroism, binding assays, and coupled enzymatic assays in vitro. The position requires maintaining detailed records of work, creation of formal documents and presentations, participation in the technology transfer process to IDT’s commercial production group.
Responsibilities:
Execute bench experiments using variety of molecular biology, cell biology, biochemical, biophysical, and general laboratory techniques to innovate protein-based Genomics products offered by IDT. Primary duties will include bacterial fermentation and collection, protein purification, quantification, and detection of unwanted biological activity. Additional technology exposure will include growing cells in culture, nucleic acid isolation, qPCR, PCR, DNA quantification, DNA and RNA sequencing using next-generation sequencing.
Conduct experimentation in support of optimization of analytical methods to characterize protein products which include, but not limited to: pre-steady-state enzymatic activities, binding affinities, quantification of various host cell proteins and gDNA.
Drafts work outline, reviews with supervisor and executes experiments under minimal oversight. Analyze, summarize, and communicate experimental results to team members.
Collaborates with multidisciplinary teams to bring projects to a successful conclusion while ensuring timelines are met.

Education:
Bachelor’s degree (in Biochemistry, Biology, Chemistry, or a related life sciences field) with ten or more years relevant lab experience required
Master’s degree (in Biochemistry, Biology, Chemistry, or a related life sciences field) with eight or more years relevant lab experience preferred
Ph.D. degree (in Biochemistry, Biology, Chemistry, or a related life sciences field) with five or more years relevant lab experience preferred
Professional Experience:
Proficiency in a variety of PC software programs with a strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office required
Experience in enzymatic and biophysical techniques used to characterize proteins
Experience with upstream and downstream bioprocessing
Data Analysis and Statistics tools such as JMP
Other Job Qualifications:
Ability to train associates in basic laboratory techniques and equipment operation.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Quick learner with a high aptitude for trouble-shooting and critically thinking.
Ability to multitask and maintain several projects simultaneously.

Experience with technology transfer from R&D to commercial manufacturing
Experience leading complex projects and acting as a technical expert within a multi-member cross-functional team
Proficiency with AKTA FPLC systems and Unicorn software and knowledgably on various chromatographic resins (affinity, IEX, HIC, mix-mode, SEC).
Physical Requirements:
Exert up to 20-50 lbs. of force occasionally and/or up to 10-15 lbs. of force frequently.
