Microbiologist II – Antimicrobial Resistance
Location: Indianapolis, IN (Onsite)
Duration: 6 Months Contract (Potential Extension)

Position Summary
We are seeking a Microbiologist II to support an Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Laboratory Network. This role is responsible for performing a wide range of microbiological and molecular analyses on clinical specimens, including culture, biochemical testing, PCR, sequencing, and whole genome sequencing (WGS) for the isolation and identification of bacterial and fungal pathogens.
The ideal candidate will have experience working in a high-complexity laboratory environment and a strong background in microbiology, molecular biology, and quality assurance practices regulated by CLIA.
Key Responsibilities
Perform microbiological and molecular testing on clinical specimens and reference samples.
Isolate, identify, and characterize bacterial and fungal pathogens, including antimicrobial-resistant organisms.
Conduct nucleic acid extraction using manual and automated methodologies.
Utilize laboratory techniques including:
PCR
DNA Sequencing
Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS)
MALDI-TOF
Biochemical Testing
Culture-Based Identification
Evaluate, validate, interpret, and report laboratory test results.
Maintain accurate laboratory records and documentation.
Perform quality control and quality assurance activities in compliance with CLIA regulations.
Monitor laboratory inventory and order supplies as needed.
Assist in preparing epidemiological, statistical, and laboratory reports.
Participate in proficiency testing programs and maintain competency in assigned testing areas.
Support additional laboratory functions through cross-training in microbiology, molecular diagnostics, virology, serology, and related disciplines.
Required Qualifications
Extensive knowledge of microbiology principles, theories, and laboratory practices.
Experience with microbiological and molecular testing methodologies.
Knowledge of laboratory safety standards and quality assurance practices.
Familiarity with CLIA regulations and laboratory compliance requirements.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to prepare, analyze, and interpret laboratory reports.
Ability to participate successfully in proficiency testing programs.
Highly Desired Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, or a related field.
Minimum 2 years of experience in a high-complexity clinical or public health laboratory.
Experience providing oversight or support for high-complexity laboratory testing.
Experience with antimicrobial resistance testing and surveillance programs.
Hands-on experience with PCR, sequencing technologies, MALDI-TOF, and Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS).
