Role Summary
The Marketing Strategy Manager is the lead strategic mind and effectiveness guardian for key client accounts, operating as a direct strategic extension of the Director of Client Services. This role translates complex business goals into clear, outcome‑oriented marketing strategies, frameworks, and briefs that the team can confidently execute against.
The Marketing Strategy Manager designs and refines brand positioning, integrated marketing and media plans, and creative briefs, then stays closely involved through execution and performance review to ensure work remains on‑strategy, on‑brand, and aligned to the client’s business objectives. They bring strong digital, paid media, and analytics acumen, and they coach the team to think and operate with the same level of strategic discipline.
Core Responsibilities
1. Strategic discovery, research, positioning, and planning
- Lead discovery to clarify the business problem, desired outcomes, buying dynamics, constraints, and target audiences for each client or initiative.
- Conduct and synthesize research (e.g., audience, competitive, category, keyword, and channel research) into clear insights that inform strategy and recommendations.
- Translate qualitative input, market context, and performance data into audience definitions, personas, positioning, and strategic themes.
- Build outcome‑oriented brand, campaign, and go‑to‑market strategies that connect business goals to messaging, channels, and execution priorities across digital and traditional media.
2. Media, digital, and channel strategy
- Develop integrated media and channel strategies spanning paid, owned, and earned channels (e.g., paid social, search, display, programmatic, email, web, content).
- Use market and performance research to define the role of each channel in the funnel (awareness, consideration, conversion, retention), recommend budget allocation, and align tactics accordingly.
- Partner with media and digital teams to translate strategy into clear media plans, flighting, targeting, and optimization approaches.
3. Strategy frameworks, briefs, and direction
- Own the strategic framework across assigned accounts, ensuring work is grounded in business outcomes rather than isolated tactics.
- Define outcomes, KPIs, and business impact metrics up front, and use them as the standard for internal review and decision‑making.
- Create and maintain core strategic documents, including brand/positioning briefs, marketing and campaign briefs, and project‑specific creative briefs.
- Ensure every brief provides sufficient clarity on objective, audience, key messages, and rationale so a capable creator or media specialist can execute without guesswork.
4. Analytics, insight, and optimization
- Partner with analytics and media teams to design measurement approaches, dashboards, and reporting that reflect agreed‑upon KPIs and business outcomes.
- Review campaign and channel performance, connect data to decisions, and identify what is truly driving results vs. vanity metrics.
- Recommend specific optimizations (creative, messaging, audience, budget, channel mix, sequencing) and test plans that improve effectiveness over time.
- Translate performance and learning into clear narratives and visual summaries that non‑technical stakeholders can quickly understand and act on.
5. Integrated execution and communication
- Create strategic maps and visual narratives that connect goals, insights, audiences, positioning, campaigns, channels, and success metrics so internal teams and clients can “see” and understand the plan end‑to‑end.
- Along with Director of Client Services and Senior Account Manager, lead the strategy portion of internal briefings and client presentations, explaining the logic behind the strategy, how the components connect, and what success looks like.
- Provide strategic direction for campaigns, content, and creative to ensure deliverables are on‑strategy, on‑brand, and appropriate for the channels and audiences involved.
6. Coaching, partnership, and problem‑solving
- Act as a strategic partner to the Director of Client Services, translating client realities and growth opportunities into clear strategies, priorities, and next steps.
- Proactively identify what is missing in the work—such as clarity, focus, alignment, or connection to KPIs—and coach account, media, and creative team members to close those gaps.
- Mentor the team in marketing and media fundamentals, research‑driven strategy, and the effective use of both data and informed judgment.
- Surface strategic risks early, clarifying issues and options when problems arise.
Intangibles
- Strategic depth with practicality: sees the whole system (market, buyer, product, messaging, channels, data) and quickly zeros in on the levers that matter most.
- Calm, grounded presence in fast‑moving or high‑pressure situations, keeping discussions focused on facts, goals, and options.
- Outcome‑first mindset: starts from business objectives and works backward to strategy, media, and tactics.
- Narrative and visual clarity: turns complex dynamics and performance data into simple, actionable stories and visuals.
- Collaborative coaching: enjoys mentoring others, inviting ideas, and building strategic muscle across the team.
- Balanced data and intuition: values analytics, but also uses experience and pattern recognition to shape recommendations.
- Resilient and assertive: kindly but firmly challenges shallow thinking, unclear language, misaligned direction, or “we’ve always done it this way” approaches—even with senior stakeholders.
Ideal Experience and Background
- 5-7 years in marketing, brand, or digital/paid media strategy roles, with experience spanning B2B and/or B2C environments.
- Experience in roles such as Marketing Strategy Manager, Integrated Marketing Manager, or Senior Marketing Manager with a strong focus on media and digital strategy.
- Proven track record of turning ambiguous business goals into structured strategies, briefs, media plans, and campaigns that deliver measurable business outcomes.
- Hands‑on familiarity with digital channels (e.g., paid social, search, display, programmatic, email, web) and the analytics tools and platforms used to measure performance.
- Comfortable collaborating with senior stakeholders, facilitating discovery conversations, presenting strategic recommendations, and coaching cross‑functional teams.
