Job Summary
The ILS Instructor helps participants achieve their goals by providing person-centered, culturally competent, and high-quality services. This includes delivering skill training based on each participant's goals. The ILS Instructor teaches skills for independent living, personal empowerment, informed decision-making, and community engagement, while offering ongoing support to ensure long-term success and growth. This role instructs participants in how to achieve their plan goals, which include but are not limited to: self-care and personal hygiene, communications skills, social and recreational skills, self-advocacy, interpersonal interactions, engaging with the community, nutrition, household maintenance, health maintenance, personal planning, managing finances, transportation, etc.
Job Responsibilities
- Establish rapport and maintain a supportive and trusting relationship with assigned participants.
- Provide instruction and mentorship that is respectful to the individual’s beliefs, culturally sensitive, and personally empowering.
- Treat participants with respect and dignity, while maintaining privacy and confidentiality of information obtained while performing services.
- Promote independence and integration to the individual’s natural environment, while minimizing risk of endangerment to the health, safety, and well-being of the participants.
- Assist participants, as needed, in accessing services such as Section 8, low-income housing, and related benefits and programs.
- Maintain accurate service notes and participant updates, and submit to the Program Director in a timely manner.
- Assist in scheduling medical appointments, and accompany or transport them, if requested and needed.
- Support participants’ independence by facilitating transportation for medical, personal, and daily living needs.
- Communicate professionally and in a timely manner with ILS Program Director and Regional Center, regarding all issues and inquiries related to participant and provided services.
- Participate in required assessments, annual, semi-annual, quarterly, and Regional Center Interdisciplinary Meetings as needed.
- Perform First Aid and CPR, as needed, should an emergency arise.
- Remain in compliance with all required training and mandatory meetings.
- Communicate with the ILS Program Director proactively, regarding all participant issues, and report situations when participant becomes a danger to self or others, there is suspected abuse, a sudden illness, hospitalization, or special incident.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED
- At least 6 months experience providing direct service and support to people with intellectual disabilities, or experience working in a human services setting.
- Fluent in English or Spanish, bilingual preferred.
- Good oral, written, and interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively on a multi-disciplinary team.
Requirements
- Valid California’s Driver’s License.
- Reliable, registered, and insured vehicle.
- Clean driving record.
- First aid/CPR certified preferred, or willingness to get certification before starting to see clients.
