Utility and Project Technician

Job Summary/Objective:

The Utility and Project Technician is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and sanitary environment throughout the facility. This multifaceted role includes general housekeeping, floor care, laundry services, and special project tasks to support infection prevention and operational readiness. The position supports all facility zones—patient care areas, public spaces, and support areas—in accordance with federal, state, and facility guidelines.

Essential Functions:

  • Provide special project support and work effort across the Environment of Care, including environmental cleaning, infection prevention, linen/laundry management, and targeted floor care in response to departmental or operational requests.
  • Perform daily cleaning and sanitation tasks as assigned, including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, and disinfecting.
  • Clean and disinfect patient rooms, restrooms, clinical areas, offices, and public spaces according to infection prevention protocols. Conduct floor care duties such as stripping, waxing, buffing, and burnishing, following routine maintenance schedules.
  • Operate laundry equipment to process linens; collect, sort, weigh, fold, hang, and distribute laundry.
  • Clean and replace privacy curtains throughout the facility on a regular rotation.
  • Safely use ladders for high-reach cleaning and curtain replacement (up to 15’-0” in height).
  • Manage waste disposal, including regulated and hazardous medical waste, ensuring compliance with safety and infection control standards.
  • Monitor inventory and supplies for cleaning, laundry, and floor care tasks; report equipment issues promptly.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of carts, closets, and workstations.
  • Participate in ongoing safety, fire, and emergency preparedness training and drills.
  • Adhere to all facility safety policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Perform other departmental duties as assigned by the Environmental Services Manager or designee.

Work Environment:

This position requires lifting up to 40 pounds and involves continuous movement including standing, walking, bending, stooping, and climbing ladders. Work is performed throughout the facility and may involve exposure to cleaning chemicals, biohazards, infectious materials, and varying environmental conditions. Shifts may include weekends and holidays, as required by operational needs.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods
  • Frequent reaching, bending, lifting, carrying, and climbing
  • Use of ladders and ability to safely perform overhead tasks such as curtain replacement, ceiling tile cleaning/replacement, cleaning of air vents, and/or similar environmental cleaning requirements
  • Capacity to lift and/or carry up to 40 pounds regularly

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

Hourly position with flexible scheduling to include day, evening, weekend, and holiday shifts.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • One (1) year of experience in housekeeping, floor care, or laundry services in a healthcare or similar setting preferred
  • General understanding of infection prevention and environmental safety standards
