Scope of Position
The OSUCCC – James Executive Communications Specialist supports the development and writing of speeches, presentations, and other narrative content on behalf of the Office of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC – James). This role focuses on researching, interviewing subject-matter experts, and translating complex scientific and clinical concepts into clear, compelling stories for diverse audiences across internal and external channels. The Specialist also assists with preparing materials for media, periodicals, digital platforms, and other communication outlets.
This position is situated within the Marketing and Strategic Communications Department, which is responsible for the overall image management and all internal and external communications and marketing activities for The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and associated departments, clinics and research facilities.
Position Summary
The Executive Communications Specialist supports the research, coordination, national- reputation and thought- leadership content for the CEO of the OSUCCC-James. This includes, long-form writing such as book chapters, editorials, speeches, presentations, as well as internal and external executive communications correspondence, event briefings, backgrounders and talking points). The Specialist helps develop clear, accurate, compelling written materials for a range of audiences and channels, translating complex scientific and clinical topics into accessible narrative content.
The Executive Communications Specialist is responsible for not only planning and creating high-quality content but also distributing it through various communication channels – traditional, interactive, social and emerging technologies – and optimizing its findability and shareability by web-based search engines and across digital channels. In addition, this position may be assigned to participate in and support various ad hoc committees and work teams involving other OSUCCC – James and Medical Center faculty and staff, department team members, graphic designers, photographers, videographers, web developers and user-experience designers both in-house and freelance. This role requires excellent reporting, writing, and editing skills, as the Executive Communications Specialist will often be required to produce high-quality content on a quick deadline. This position interacts as-needed with appropriate OSUCCC – James and Medical Center leaders and will support the Director of Executive Communications with editing, writing and proofreading to facilitate special projects and promote OSUCCC – James initiatives and manage and send enterprise-wide emails on behalf of the Office of the CEO.
Minimum Qualifications
For Hire: For Hire: Bachelor’s degree in journalism, English, history, bioethics, STS, science and/or related field required.
Minimum of 4 years of proven experience in communications, writing, research, journalism, speechwriting, editorial work or related field required. Strong professional writing, presentation development, and strategic communications experience, knowledge of effective editorial and techniques.
Experience conducting interviews, synthesizing complex information, and producing clear, compelling written materials. Strong problem-solving, writing, editing and proofreading skills essential. Must have excellent verbal communication skills as well as presentation and negotiation skills. Strong problem-solving abilities with demonstrated superior organizational skills. Ability to manage diverse projects. Thrives in fast-paced, deadline-driven environment, and adapts quickly and easily to shifting priorities and continuous change. Demonstrates discretion regarding highly confidential matters; highly professional demeanor. Possesses superior organizational skills; ability and willingness to adapt with shifting priorities; availability to work after-hours upon request. Familiarity with photography, video, printing, budget management and content analytics preferred. Proficient with the Microsoft Office Suite.
