Teaching Assistant Professor (Philosophy)

Inside Higher Ed
Chapel Hill, NC Full Time
POSTED ON 11/6/2025
AVAILABLE BEFORE 1/2/2026
The Department of Philosophy within the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is seeking to appoint a non-tenure-track Teaching Assistant Professor to begin July 1, 2026. The initial appointment will be for a term of three years with the possibility of renewal. The position offers state health benefits and the opportunity to join our active, vigorous, and welcoming philosophical community.

The position’s primary responsibility will be to design and teach undergraduate courses that satisfy the Data, Culture, and Society (DCS) requirement in the College’s Data Science minor. We seek a colleague with expertise at the intersection of philosophy and data — for example, the ethics of data and AI, the philosophy of technology, the social/political philosophy of data, or related areas — who can help students place data and computation in social, cultural, and ethical contexts. The successful candidate will contribute centrally to UNC’s growing curriculum in AI and data science, while also strengthening the Department of Philosophy’s undergraduate curriculum.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Teach six courses per academic year (3-3). The expectation is that five of the courses will satisfy the DCS requirement for the College’s Data Science minor; some may be cross-listed with relevant units (e.g., Statistics and Operations Research, Computer Science, Communication), subject to approval.
  • Develop new undergraduate courses and assist faculty in developing courses satisfying the Data, Culture, and Society requirement; periodically teach other general-education courses in the Philosophy Department (e.g., Introduction to Philosophy, Philosophy of Science, Ethics).
  • Collaborate with the Department of Statistics and Operations Research to schedule and assess DCS offerings and to support students pursuing the data science minor or major.
  • Advise and mentor undergraduate students; contribute to departmental service and the intellectual life of the department.
  • Use inclusive pedagogy and evidence-based teaching practices that support a diverse student body from across the university.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Philosophy or a closely related field (e.g., Science and Technology Studies, Information Science) within one year of the start date.
  • Demonstrated excellence in undergraduate teaching.
  • Evidence of the ability to design and lead interdisciplinary courses that engage social, cultural, or ethical dimensions of data.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience teaching courses that meet data-ethics/technology-and-society requirements or that attract students from multiple majors.
  • A record of inclusive, student-centered pedagogy and curriculum design.
  • A promising research agenda.

Application Materials

Applicants should submit: (1) a cover letter describing fit for the position and experience with teaching courses that engage with social, political, cultural, and/or ethical dimensions of data; (2) curriculum vitae; (3) a teaching portfolio (including teaching statement, sample syllabi, and student evaluations); (4) writing sample; (5) research statement; and (6) the names, titles, affiliations, and email addresses of those who are writing letters of recommendation for you (three are required, five are permitted). Letters will be requested for finalists.

How to Apply

Apply online at: https://unc.peopleadmin.com/postings/307465

Review of applications will begin on December 1, 2025, and will continue until the position is filled.

We seek applicants who strive to promote access to resources and promote student success in a public university setting where students reflect the socioeconomic, racial, religious, and other diverse characteristics across the state. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to age, color, disability, gender, gender expression, gender identity, genetic information, national origin, race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, or status as a protected veteran.
