The Department invites applications for a nine-month, non-tenure-track position at the rank of Teaching Assistant Professor or Teaching Associate Professor in Actuarial Science.The primary responsibility of this role is to deliver engaging instruction in introductory service and actuarial science courses, incorporating effective teaching practices and technology-enhanced learning strategies. Successful candidates will have a PhD in Actuarial Science, Statistics, Operations Research, Mathematics, or a closely related field paired with an actuarial credential such as an ASA, ACAS, FSA, or FCAS. Candidates making significant progress toward the credential are encouraged to apply.

Primary Purpose Of Organizational Unit

The primary mission of the Department of Statistics and Operations Research (STOR) in the College of Arts and Sciences is teaching, research and service. The STOR Department specializes in inference, decision-making, and data analysis involving complex models and systems exhibiting both deterministic and random behavior and focuses on developing and analyzing the necessary quantitative and computational tools to enable practitioners to solve problems in statistical and probabilistic analysis, modeling, optimization, and the evaluation of system performance.

The faculty engage in fundamental research in probability, statistics, stochastic processes, and optimization, and are also heavily involved with interdisciplinary areas of application such as genomics, biological modeling, environmental statistics, insurance, and financial mathematics, revenue, workforce, and supply-chain management, traffic flow and congestion, telecommunications , and forensics. The department’s research work is at the core of Statistics, Operations Research, Industrial Engineering, Data Science, Machine Learning/AI, Analytics, Network Science and related fields.

The Graduate Programs in STOR provide challenging and comprehensive training across the full spectrum of statistics and operations research, including theoretical foundations, cutting-edge applications, and state-of-the-art computation. Graduates work in many diverse areas of industry and government, as well as serving on university faculties throughout the United States and abroad.

The Undergraduate Program in Statistics and Analytics is designed for students who like to tackle challenging quantitative problems in a business or scientific environment. STAN graduates go on to attend some of the most competitive graduate programs in statistics, biostatistics, operations research, industrial engineering, finance and related disciplines, as well as serving in top corporations in a wide variety of fields.

The department has 31 tenure track professors, 5 teaching professors and several jointly appointed faculty members. This department annually serves approximately 97 graduate students and 2,100 undergraduate majors and minors. We also serve over 2,055 undergraduate and graduate students in other fields.

The department runs the UNC Statistical / Data Science Consulting Center, which serves clients across campus and elsewhere. Under the supervision of faculty members, graduate students work with the clients to address their statistical & data science questions.

Separately, STOR graduate students run the Data Outreach Program for Students (Data OPS) aimed at educating local K-12 students in data science topics.

Position Summary

The Department of Statistics and Operations Research invites applications for a non-tenure-track position at the rank of Teaching Assistant Professor or Teaching Associate Professor in Actuarial Science. We seek candidates with demonstrated excellence-or strong potential-in teaching actuarial principles, mathematics, and statistics/operations research, with the goal of preparing students for professional actuarial examinations. The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to the advancement of the department’s instructional programs and pedagogical initiatives.

This renewable position begins with a three-year (or five-year contract if hired at the rank of a Teaching Associate Professor) contract and offers opportunities for promotion (Teaching Associate Professor, Teaching Professor) and longer-term appointments, aligning with a clear teaching-focused career trajectory.

The primary responsibility of this role is to deliver engaging instruction in introductory service courses, incorporating effective teaching practices and technology-enhanced learning strategies. The successful candidate will teach six undergraduate courses across the academic year (two semesters).

In addition to teaching, responsibilities for this position include academic advising and mentoring of undergraduate students majoring in Statistics and Analytics and taking Actuarial Science courses. Active participation in departmental life (including committee service, support of departmental initiatives, and contributions to collaborative projects), is expected.

Opportunities for summer teaching assignments are generally available and compensated separately.

Minimum Education And Experience Requirements

A doctorate in Statistics, Mathematics, Operations Research or a related field by the start date of the appointment.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, And Experience

Must be comfortable with large-enrollment introductory service courses, utilizing appropriate technology enhancements and pedagogy techniques and advising and mentoring undergraduate students majoring in Statistics and Analytics.

Campus Security Authority Responsibilities

This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. This position will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training about reporting responsibilities.
