Job Summary

The Head Cheer Coach is responsible for leading and managing all aspects of the Columbus State University Cheer Program. This part-time, stipend position includes recruiting student-athletes, coaching and developing the team, preparing for game day performances at basketball events, and organizing and training for competitive cheer opportunities. The Head Coach will promote school spirit, sportsmanship, and represent the university in a positive and professional manner.

Responsibilities

Program Leadership & Coaching

  • Plan, organize, and conduct regular practices for the cheer team
  • Develop and teach game day routines, sideline cheers, and halftime performances
  • Prepare and coach the team for collegiate cheer competitions
  • Ensure athlete development in stunting, tumbling, conditioning, and performance skills
  • Maintain a positive, disciplined, and team-oriented culture

Recruiting & Team Management

  • Recruit and retain qualified student-athletes for the cheer program
  • Organize and conduct tryouts and team selection processes
  • Monitor academic progress and eligibility of team members
  • Foster leadership, teamwork, and personal development among athletes

Game Day & Event Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and execute cheer activities at men's and women's basketball games
  • Collaborate with athletics staff for game day operations and promotions
  • Represent the university at athletic and community events as needed

Competition Preparation

  • Select appropriate competitions and manage registration processes
  • Choreograph or coordinate routines for competition performances
  • Prepare travel logistics in collaboration with the athletics department

Administrative Duties

  • Manage program budget and equipment needs (if applicable)
  • Ensure compliance with university, conference, and safety guidelines
  • Maintain communication with athletics administration
  • Oversee uniform distribution, inventory, and maintenance

Required

Required Qualifications

  • Prior cheerleading and/or coaching experience (high school, collegiate, or all-star level);
  • Knowledge of stunting safety standards and cheer techniques;
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.

Preferred

  • Cheer coaching experience;
  • Experience coaching competitive cheer teams;
  • CPR/First Aid/AED certification (or willingness to obtain);
  • USA Cheer or equivalent safety certification.

Proposed Salary

Work Schedule

  • Part-time, stipend position ($15,000 per year).
  • Requires evening and weekend availability for practices, games, and competitions.
  • Travel may be required for competitions and recruiting.

Requirements

All selected candidates are required to submit and successfully pass a background investigation to include reference checks and verification of academic credentials (if applicable). Other additional requirements may be required based upon specific position duties:

  • A credit check completed for Positions of Trust and or approved departmental Purchase Card usage;
  • Pre-employment drug testing for positions with high-risk responsibilities.
  • Motor vehicle reports are required for positions that are required to drive a Columbus State University fleet vehicle or other vehicle designated as a fleet vehicle. A successful drug screening will be required as a condition of employment a randomly thereafter.

For Faculty Hires: Final candidates will be required to provide proof of completed academic degree(s) as well as post-secondary coursework in the form of original transcript(s). Those candidates trained by a foreign institution will also be required to provide an educational/credential evaluation.
