About The University Of Georgia

Chartered by the state of Georgia in 1785, the University of Georgia is the birthplace of public higher education in America and is the state’s flagship university (https://www.uga.edu/). The proof is in our more than 240 years of academic and professional achievements and our continual commitment to higher education. UGA is currently ranked among the top 20 public universities in U.S. News & World Report. The University’s main campus is located in Athens, approximately 65 miles northeast of Atlanta, with extended campuses in Atlanta, Griffin, Gwinnett, and Tifton. UGA employs approximately 3,100 faculty and more than 7,700 full-time staff. The University’s enrollment exceeds 41,000 students including over 31,000 undergraduates and over 10,000 graduate and professional students. Academic programs reside in 19 schools and colleges, including our newly established School of Medicine.

About The College/Unit/Department

The Department of Small Animal Medicine and Surgery consists of approximately 50 faculty members, 50 clinical residents, 10 rotating interns, 8 specialty interns, and 3 administrative staff members. Shared laboratory space and technical support are provided within the department, and 7 dedicated research technicians assist with the research missions of the department’s faculty. Other specialties within the department include anesthesia, dermatology, internal medicine, neurology, nutrition, medical and radiation oncology, ophthalmology, orthopedic surgery, radiology, and zoological medicine, as well as a community practice and spectrum-of-care program (UGA Pet Health Center). The Department participates in the college-wide M.S. and Ph.D. programs. Members of the department also actively participate in highly successful collaborative efforts with faculty members from other departments within the college and other colleges on campus, including the College of Public Health, College of Engineering, and the Athens campus of the Medical College of Georgia. The department has a strong track record for teaching, research, and clinical service.

The service enjoys ready access to a Siemens 3.0T MRI unit, 3rd generation 128-slice helical CT, fluoroscopy, intraoperative C-arm, digital radiography, full laboratory support, and a dedicated interventional radiology suite with a ceiling-mounted Canon Alphenix C-arm. The Veterinary Teaching Hospital is a 300,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility where each specialty has its own dedicated rounds room. Faculty members’ offices and over 5,400 square feet of shared research space are located on the floor above the hospital.

The soft tissue surgery service is highly active, providing evaluation and surgical care for approximately 1,300-1,400 cases per year. The surgery service benefits from collegial relations and the support of the other hospital services including oncology, radiation therapy, neurology, anesthesia, and critical care.

The University of Georgia, the nation’s first chartered state-supported university, is a research-intensive land-grant and sea-grant university located in the vibrant college town of Athens. Only an hour from Atlanta, Athens is a progressive city with a rich history, set amid beautiful surrounding landscapes. The area abounds in local music, art, literature, and theatre, and hosts many performances by national and international touring artists. The cost of living in Athens compares favorably with much of the rest of the country, ranking lower than the U.S. average (http://www.bestplaces.net/city/georgia/athensclarke_county).
