Job Summary

The Department of Physiology and Neurobiology (PNB) seeks applicants for a full-time Laboratory Manager to oversee instructional physiology and anatomy laboratories. The successful applicant will provide hands-on supervisory and technical leadership, coordination, and day-to-day management of undergraduate teaching laboratories and discussion sections that support multiple courses.

This position currently supervises two lab technicians and participates in laboratory work to support courses including Human Physiology and Anatomy (PNB 2264 & 2265), Enhanced Human Physiology and Anatomy I and II (PNB 2774 and 2775), and Enhanced Human Physiology and Anatomy Laboratory (PNB 2776), and works closely with faculty, staff, and teaching assistants to ensure effective laboratory instruction and operations.

Duties And Responsibilities

  • Instructional Support & Course Development
  • Coordinate and provide technical and instructional support for undergraduate physiology and anatomy laboratory courses.
  • Assist faculty with the development, testing, and refinement of laboratory experiments and instructional activities to ensure alignment with course learning objectives.
  • Monitor laboratory sessions, identify operational or instructional issues, and evaluate and implement solutions to support effective student learning.
  • Ensure consistency in laboratory delivery across sections and instructors.
  • Provide day-to-day supervision of assigned laboratory personnel and instructional teaching assistants, including scheduling, technical training, mentoring, and performance feedback. Note that labs run from early morning to late in the evening, and the lab manager may need to be present on some evenings.
  • Supervision & TA Coordination:
  • Provide day-to-day supervision of assigned laboratory personnel and instructional teaching assistants, including scheduling, technical training, mentoring, and performance feedback
  • Coordinate teaching assistant assignment and assist with the development of teaching scheduling.
  • Laboratory Operations & Equipment Management:
  • Maintain laboratory facilities and equipment, oversee routine maintenance, and perform minor repairs as needed.
  • Prepare, manage and monitor the laboratory budget; provide budget requests for supplies and equipment necessary for the Physiology and Anatomy undergraduate laboratory courses.
  • Animal Use & Curriculum-Required Euthanasia:
  • Perform humane animal euthanasia and tissue collection as an essential component of the department’s laboratory curriculum and research support. This position requires a high degree of comfort with repeated euthanasia procedures, always conducted in alignment with IACUC-approved methods and regulatory standards.
  • Safety, Compliance & Regulatory Oversight:
  • Develop and implement safety protocols consistent with Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) requirements.
  • Coordinate the preparation, submission, and maintenance of IACUC animal use protocols; ensure compliance with institutional and regulatory requirements; provide training to laboratory staff and teaching assistants.
  • Administrative Planning & Departmental Support:
  • Assist in the administrative planning, development, and evaluation of policies and procedures.
  • Lead or assist with special projects as assigned, such as departmental workshops, instructional exhibits, or other educational events.
  • Participate in strategic planning for future course growth and development.
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Physiology, Neuroscience, Biology, or a closely related field and six years of progressively responsible experience in laboratory operations, teaching laboratories, or scientific research, including hands-on responsibility for laboratory preparation, equipment management and instructional support or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience supervising staff, students, or teaching assistants in a laboratory or instructional setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain laboratory facilities and equipment, perform routine maintenance, and conduct minor repairs independently.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with administrative and operational software systems, such as Microsoft Office, inventory management, procurement, scheduling, or similar platforms.
  • Communication and organizational skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ph.D. in Physiology, Neuroscience, Biology, or a closely related field.
  • Experience managing budgets and projections related to laboratories.
  • Experience with PowerLab or similar data acquisition systems.
  • Proficiency with UConn enterprise systems—including HuskyBuy, Concur, CourseLeaf, WebFOCUS, Qualtrics, and Jira—and the ability to navigate additional University administrative platforms.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse student, administrative, and faculty populations and contribute to a supportive educational environment, while enhancing the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
