Job Summary
Responsible for developing new synthetic methods in research group. Conduct optimization of new chemical transformations, prepare full characterization of any novel compounds, provide manuscripts to be submitted for peer-reviewed publications, and mentor graduate students. Other duties as assigned.
Please note: the department is recruiting to fill two vacancies for this temporary assignment.
Job Duties
40% - Essential - Responsible for developing new synthetic methods in research group. Conduct optimization of new chemical transformations, prepare full characterization of any novel compounds focusing on developing new synthetic methodologies in the oxygenative functionalization of alcohol and carboxylic acid starting materials. By exploiting the catalysts and methods they will develop SuFEx (Sulfur Fluorine Exchange) mediated alcohol deoxy-halogenation, deoxygenation, and deoxy-alkylation reactions.
20% - Essential - Employ titanium-catalysis to develop an enantioselective deoxy-cyanation of amides. Operates and maintains laboratory equipment (liquid-chromatography mass spectroscopy, supercritical fluid chromatography, automatic flash chromatography, glovebox, etc).
20% - Essential - Provide manuscripts to be submitted for peer review publications. Organize the on-going research projects and implement collaboration. Design and implement any new research protocols, methods or instrumentation. Maintains and updates the chemical inventory system.
20% - Essential - Mentor graduate students. Trains graduate students on all the laboratory equipment. Trains graduate students on all the basic laboratory skills and reaction analysis. Trains graduate students on their on-going projects.
Minimum Requirements
Education - A high school diploma and work experience in a related health care setting or in a clinical or research laboratory setting; or 12 semester hours of academic training in biology and/or chemistry; or registration as a Certified Laboratory Assistant by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists or an equivalent registry; or successful completion of a formal program of instruction for laboratory assistants at a hospital or academic institution.

Compensation Information
Anticipated Salary Range: $14.75 - $16.50/hour
Salary is dependent upon several factors including, but not limited to, a candidate's previous experience, knowledge, skills and performance in accordance with Clemson's compensation guidelines.
Essential Personnel Level
Normal Operations
Required to follow emergency facility closure directives, and not normally expected work on-site during emergency situations.
