Primary Purpose Of Organizational Unit

The mission of the School of Nursing is to enhance and improve the health and well-being of the people of North Carolina and the nation, and, as relevant and appropriate, the people of other nations, through its programs of education, research, and scholarship, and through clinical practice and community service. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Nursing has been the leader in nursing education in North Carolina throughout its history. Established in 1950, it was the first school of nursing in North Carolina to offer a four-year baccalaureate nursing degree program followed by the first master’s degree program, the first continuing education program for nurses, first doctoral program, and first accelerated BSN option to students with college degrees. Today, the School is renowned for its academic programs, its research and its commitment to clinical and community service within state, national and global communities.

Position Summary

The position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station

Reporting to the Assistant Dean for Innovation in Teaching & Learning (ADITL) within the Office of Academic Affairs, the instructional designer is responsible for assisting faculty and teaching staff in developing course materials and activities, identifying instructional needs for classroom, web-based, mobile, and online learning, and creating assessments. The instructional designer will partner with faculty to brainstorm, develop, implement, and evaluate innovative and pedagogically sound instructional solutions. This individual will assist with curricular processes related to technological innovation across all School of Nursing education programs, including pre-licensure, MSN, DNP, and PhD programs, ensuring that all curricula align with the defined program outcomes. The instructional designer will research and recommend continuous quality improvements for teaching methods that facilitate and encourage student interaction and engagement, as well as contribute to learning assessments, metrics, and outcomes. The instructional designer will work closely with the ADITL and members of the Informational and Instructional Technologies (IIT) team.

This position requires a highly motivated, organized, and independent self-starter who is curious, creative, and willing to take initiative in implementing innovative instructional strategies within a collaborative and team-oriented environment. This individual must be a creative thinker who can transcend current practices and build opportunities to advocate change, support, and communicate effectively with faculty while working in a diverse and cross-functional environment. This person must possess excellent presentation, written, and oral communication, and interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop evidence-based, technology-rich, and effective courses and programs, interactive exercises and activities, assessments, and various online course components
  • Provide instructional design expertise for course design and redesign projects
  • Support faculty in utilizing the current learning management system to enhance their workflow and increase student engagement with course materials
  • Advocate for accessible visual design and user experience for faculty and students
  • Apply research-based principles and standards for high-quality online, face-to-face, blended, hybrid, or hyflex courses
  • Work with EdTech to advise, consult, and assist faculty in the design, development, and implementation of technology that supports and enhances teaching and learning
  • Partner with faculty in translating course content into design solutions, including presentations, infographics, and animations
  • Provide training, workshops, and support to faculty, students, and staff
  • Consult with internal or external stakeholders on needs assessment, course design/redesign, or implementation of procedures to assess technologies and techniques in teaching and learning
  • Participate in other SON-related projects and initiatives as assigned

Minimum Education And Experience Requirements

Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent educational or instructional activities related to the development or administration of academic standards or curricula, will accept a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, And Experience

  • Experience using and creating content for use in learning management systems (i.e., Moodle and Canvas)
  • Experience using Microsoft Office Suite or similar software
  • Experience using a variety of instructional technologies to create learning materials
  • Ability to establish and maintain high-quality working relationships with internal and external stakeholders, faculty and staff, and administrators
  • Knowledge of best practices in online learning environments and experience designing online learning elements
  • Experience managing multiple projects, prioritizing work, and meeting deadlines
  • Ability to research and keep abreast of instructional trends, changes, and emerging technologies

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, And Experience

  • Knowledge of and experience with Quality Matters (QM) Higher Education Rubric (course certifications, APPQMR completion, peer reviewer, or workshop facilitator)
  • Knowledge of best practices regarding accessibility standards (i.e., Sections 504 & 508, updated WCAG 2.2) and copyright laws in course design
  • Experience designing online or face-to-face courses
  • Ability to use various technologies (i.e., Panopto, Zoom, Padlet, Qualtrics, etc.)
  • Ability to be aware of and evaluate emerging trends in educational modalities to assist SON in being innovative and creative in its educational offerings
  • Advanced certifications or education beyond the master’s level
