The University of South Carolina – School of Medicine Greenville is seeking to hire a Human Performance Lab Manager.
The Human Performance Lab Manager serves as the operational manager of the Human Performance Laboratory (HPL), acting as the primary liaison to the Director of the HPL. This role is responsible for the comprehensive management, coordination, and strategic support for all HPL operations, personnel, and resources to ensure efficiency, compliance, and alignment with departmental research, healthcare partnership research, and instructional objectives. The HPL Manager plans, directs, and oversees all laboratory activities, exercising supervisory guidance over selected lab staff and medical students through training, performance oversight, and day-to-day operational management. The role ensures strict adherence to research protocols, safety standards, and regulatory requirements, including human subjects protection while fostering a professional, collaborative environment, and maintaining high standards for research participant/patient care. In addition to managerial responsibilities, the HPL Manager oversees the execution of complex laboratory procedures and serves as a key resource to principal investigators and research teams, providing guidance on research techniques, procedures, and best practices. This position also holds responsibility for HPL financial and operational resources including budget planning and management, the procurement and inventory management for all laboratory supplies and finances, and equipment maintenance.
Job Related Minimum Required Education And Experience:
Research: Supports the HPL Lab Director in managing operations of the Human Performance Laboratory and all related investigator and student research projects. Manages study activities to ensure compliance with protocols and with all relevant local, federal, and state regulatory and institutional polices. Maintains required records of study activity including case report forms and/or regulatory forms. Reviews proposed study protocols to evaluate factors such as sample collection processes, data management plans, and potential subject risks. Instructs and trains research staff and medical students in scientific and procedural aspects of studies including standards of care, informed consent procedures, or documentation procedures including reporting of any adverse events. Identify protocol problems, inform investigators of problems, or assist in problem resolution efforts such as protocol revisions. Prepares study-related documentation such as protocol worksheets, procedural manuals, adverse event reports, institutional review board documents, progress reports, budget justification letters, and grant project no cost extension documents when needed. Oversees enrollment of research subjects, documents dropout information, and ensures that informed consent has been properly obtained and documented by investigators. Confers with investigators regarding any adverse events. Oversees payment/incentives to research participants related to research studies and performs budget reconciliations.
Communicates with laboratories or investigators regarding research laboratory findings. Collaborates with investigators to prepare presentations, scientific publications, abstracts, and reports of clinical study procedures, results, and conclusions. Prepares for participating in quality assurance audits conducted by study sponsors, federal agencies, or specially designated review groups.

Supporting the HPL director, trains, and provides guidance to all HPL-involved students (USC SOM Greenville medical students, Clemson students, Furman Health Science students, and HPL staff) regarding research standard operating procedures and research protocols.Supporting the HPL director, conducts HPL-based research laboratory protocol procedures and data collection, including interviewing subjects, taking vital signs, and performing musculoskeletal strength/endurance testing and cardiometabolic fitness testing with 12-lead electrocardiograms on research participants, faculty, staff and students. - Requires a bachelor’s degree in a job related field and 3 or more years of job related experience, which may be substituted by an equivalent combination of job related certification, training, education, and/or experience.
- Master’s Degree in exercise science.
- Strong background in exercise physiology (strength and conditioning) and/or clinical exercise physiology and/or personal fitness.
- Strong background in biology, physiology or biochemistry.
- Practical research experience in the laboratory.
- Ability to carry out projects assigned by supervisor.
- Ability to work independently.
- Ability to work cooperatively in a small laboratory environment.
- Strong communication skills.
- General understanding, application of work physiology, clinical exercise physiology, and training in phlebotomy is desirable
- Knowledge of purchasing and inventory procedures.
