Primary Purpose Of Organizational Unit

Since 1966, researchers at the Carolina Population Center have pioneered data collection and research techniques that move population science forward by emphasizing life course approaches, longitudinal surveys, the integration of biological measurement into social surveys, and attention to context and environment. We are also at the forefront of creating interdisciplinary training programs that integrate approaches from the social and biological sciences, building research capacity and training the next generation of scholars. Our faculty fellows address pressing research questions about population dynamics, fertility, health, mortality, migration, and the environment. Faculty come from multiple disciplines, benefitting from the cross-pollination of ideas. Position Summary

The Carolina Population Center (CPC) is a community of scholars and professionals who collaborate on interdisciplinary research and methods that advance understanding of population issues. The Global Food Research Program (GFRP) is located within the CPC and focuses on nutrition policy research, both domestic and global. A large part of GFRP’s work revolves around informing on and evaluating policies and programs aimed at improving dietary intake and preventing obesity and related chronic diseases in countries where such regulations or programs may be implemented, including the US, Latin America, and Africa. GFRP is funded by approximately $37 million in grants from the US government and foundation sources such as National Institutes of Health, Bloomberg Philanthropies, and Wellcome Trust.

The GFRP Research Dissemination Director is responsible for the management and strategic direction of the Global Food Research Program’s (GFRP’s) research translation and dissemination. This position will translate complex policy, nutrition research, and technical information into a variety of formats for external audiences and promote use of research and evaluation results. This position will create materials including research briefs, technical reports, case studies, blogs, feature articles, factsheets, and social media and web content of varying styles and length to support program objectives and strategic goals of GFRP, CPC, and UNC-Chapel Hill. This position will also provide technical assistance to research faculty, staff, and students and around content development and catering products to specific audiences. This will include both written and designed content such as figures, presentations, and other graphics. They will be responsible for developing dissemination strategies that will ensure research products reach intended audiences and encouraging use of research findings by a variety of U.S. and international audiences. This position will also supervise a team of professional staff and consultants who will be responsible for assisting researchers with the development of dissemination products.

The GFRP Research Dissemination Director must be adept at interpreting public health data and research as well as policy documents and nutrition science to identify salient points and synthesize and analyze findings to produce high quality dissemination products. This position will also substantially rework documents written by others to improve organization, coherence, clarity, accuracy, and ensure effective messaging. They will also establish or contribute to networks for strategic translation, dissemination, and use of global health evaluation and research data with other projects and organizations, to ensure collaboration and synergies.

This position will also have an active role in aspects of GFRP’s research program. They will support GFRP’s front-of-package labeling policy research projects by designing experimental stimuli such as different warning label designs and mock food and beverage products. This will require both advanced graphic design skills and understanding of front-of-package policy and experimental design. This position will also conduct or oversee ongoing data collection, cleaning, and interpretation from a global market research database to support a variety of research projects. They will also support research by collecting data on global policy adoption, implementation, and specific dimensions. They will contribute to research development by drafting, editing, formatting, and submitting grant proposals, research project progress reports, and journal manuscripts.

This position will be expected to juggle competing demands and make independent decisions about how to best meet project priorities. They are expected to participate in management and research team meetings and to understand and implement project targets and contractual requirements regarding production of deliverables.

Minimum Education And Experience Requirements

Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity, will accept a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution. May require terminal degree and licensure.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, And Experience

  • Experience in nutrition and/or public health research
  • Content development and graphic design experience in a research setting within an educational institution or nonprofit organization
  • Demonstrated experience developing high-level strategies for research translation and dissemination
  • Expert understanding of global public health issues, nutrition epidemiology, social and commercial determinants of health, and food policy
  • Strong public health research skills (e.g., reviewing scientific literature, creating data collection instruments, managing databases)
  • Demonstrated experience distilling complex public health data into visual representations
  • Experience collaborating with and providing technical assistance to U.S. and low- and middle-income country research partners and policy advocates in strategic research translation
  • Demonstrated attention to detail, accuracy, and tone of writing
  • Superior writing skills, with demonstrated skills in technical and scientific writing, and ability to write in various formats for various audiences and purposes; demonstrated skill in the uses and presentation of data to communicate a highly technical research project’s successes and outcomes
  • Excellent project management, follow-through, supervisory, and time-management skills and experience, with ability to effectively and efficiently perform multiple tasks and balance competing priorities; ability to work well under pressure, produce high volume of work, and meet tight deadlines; excellent organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Advanced knowledge of and experience working in Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office, WordPress, social media platforms, and data visualization tools.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Ability to work collaboratively and respectfully with culturally diverse colleagues and contacts

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, And Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in nutrition
  • Registered Dietitian (RD/RDN) credential
  • Three or more years of experience in nutrition and/or public health research
  • Three or more years of content development and graphic design experience in a research setting within an educational institution or nonprofit organization
  • Experience in data visualization
  • Experience in publication design
  • Experience in website and social media management
