General Description Johns Hopkins University's Research Animal Resources (RAR) has a position available for a veterinarian with a faculty appointment as Assistant or Associate Professor (commensurate with experience) in the Department of Molecular and Comparative Pathobiology, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. The RAR nonhuman primate program provides clinical expertise and research support to various animal studies and includes rhesus and pigtail breeding colonies. The pigtail macaque breeding colony at Hopkins is supported by U42 NIH funding.

Duties And Responsibilities

Supported by laboratory animal medicine (LAM) post-doctoral fellows, the successful candidate will:

  • Provide clinical oversight for Old World nonhuman primates (NHPs), including rhesus macaques, pigtail macaques, and baboons
  • Provide colony health oversight for the breeding colonies, direct semi-annual TB testing, and physical exams
  • Perform surgeries
  • Oversee NHP quarantine procedures, including import, export, and sales
  • Supervise a veterinary technician
  • Mentor LAM post-doctoral fellows in providing clinical care
  • Participate in regulatory activities, including USDA inspections, IACUC semi-annual inspections, and AAALAC site visits
  • Train researchers and veterinary/husbandry personnel
  • Conduct clinical and collaborative research
  • Consult with investigators regarding research protocols
  • Work with husbandry personnel regarding the proper care of NHPs
  • Develop SOPs, guidelines, and related documents on using and working with NHPs
  • Work collaboratively with the Breeding Colony director and Attending Veterinarian to create and implement programmatic and infrastructure improvements

Qualifications

  • Education: Doctoral degree in Veterinary Medicine (DVM/VMD)
  • Experience: Recent graduates of training programs are eligible to apply
  • Licensure: Current license to practice veterinary medicine in at least one state in the United States; current driver's license
  • Certification: Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) certified or boards-eligible
  • Others: Excellent oral and written English capabilities; a thorough knowledge of current US regulatory standards; strong teaching skills; ability to work with a diverse group of individuals, including scientists; a demonstrated ability to conduct clinical or collaborative research; a record of excellent customer service; ability to seek out, build, and maintain positive collaborative relationships with investigators

The referenced salary range represents the minimum and maximum salaries for this position and is based on Johns Hopkins University's good faith belief at the time of posting. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
