The Division of Cardiovascular Medicine is a dynamic and innovative center dedicated to excellence in research, medical education, and clinical care. Our division is driven by over 100 faculty, clinician educators and instructors who are the pillar of strength in the Division's ongoing efforts into the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease.

Stanford University Department of Medicine, Division of Cardiovascular Medicine seeks a highly qualified Director of Strategic Research Development to lead and oversee the development, implementation, administration and evaluation of grant and fellowship proposals to external funding agencies. The Director will be a key partner to the faculty and fellows to ensure their success as research investigators. The Director will lead and oversee a team of research development strategists and research administrators to improve the quality and quantity of proposals submitted to federal and non-federal sponsors.

The Director will provide their knowledge and expertise in editing, reviewing and critically evaluating grant applications from fellows and faculty to improve funding probability; interpret sponsor requirements and act as a scientific liaison to funding agencies – federal, non-federal and industry grantors. Another key component of this individual’s role will be to provide education and training in conjunction with proposal submissions. The training component includes designing workshops, tutorials and online “how to” guides on submitting grant proposals.

Duties Include

  • Lead and oversee development, implementation, administration, and evaluation of programs. Oversee analysis, reporting, and program improvements. Oversee the development, adherence to, and implementation of program policies and procedures.
  • Lead strategic planning for the program/entity.
  • Represent the entity or program to the broader university, external community, and other stakeholders. Provide expert consultation related to program development, funding opportunities, or other specialty area.
  • Develop outreach strategy related to program communications, development, partnerships and fundraising/funding. Identify external funding opportunities and write proposals and research grants. Develop and oversee strategic financial planning and sustainability for the program/entity, as needed; monitor performance and ensure appropriate controls.
  • Teach or co-teach courses; oversee the administration of courses; create and/or advise in the development of curriculum; and/or advise students, coach and mentor clients and program staff.
  • Coach and mentor program staff.

Desired Qualifications

  • Demonstrated expertise with building programs to advance research development strategies and proposal success rates within a leading academic institution.
  • Highly organized, analytical, proactive, and deadline-oriented.
  • Communicates effectively (oral and written).
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with a variety of persons.
  • Previous grant writing experience strongly preferred.

Education & Experience (required)

  • Advanced degree and five years of relevant experience in area of specialization or combination of relevant education, training, and/or experience. For jobs with financial responsibilities, experience managing a budget and developing financial plans. Experience developing program partnerships and funding sources.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities (required)

  • Ability to develop program partnerships and funding sources.
  • Advanced oral, written, and analytical skills, exhibiting fluency in area of specialization.
  • Ability to oversee and direct staff.
  • Ability to manage budgets and develop financial plans.

Certifications & Licenses

  • For teaching jobs, advanced degree or certification may be required for some programs.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently stand/walk, sitting, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Occasionally use a telephone, writing by hand, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 40 pounds.
  • Rarely sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh >40 pounds.
  • Ability to use voice to present information/communicate with others.
  • On-campus mobility.

Working Conditions

  • May work extended hours, evenings or weekends.
  • May travel locally.
  • Occasional overnight travel.

The expected pay range for this position is $139,741-$179,496 per annum.

The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
