Primary Purpose Of Organizational Unit

The Division of Comparative Medicine (DCM) is responsible for the care of all vertebrate animals on the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH) campus. DCM is committed to programs of excellence in veterinary care and laboratory animal management practices for all species used in UNC-CH research endeavors.

A staff of more than 170 professional, technical, and administrative personnel provides quality animal care to a daily population of over 200,000 animals located in 26 animal facilities on and off the UNC campus. Federal funding and foundations sponsor over $1 billion in research on the UNC campus conducted by the Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Public Health, Pharmacy, as well as the Departments of Biology, Chemistry, and Psychology.

A major responsibility of the Division’s veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and laboratory technicians is the health care and humane use of all animals. The Division’s program is reviewed semi-annually by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, and has been accredited by the Association for the Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC) since 1973. DCM and the University also meet U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Public Health Service standards and regulations. As laboratory animal specialists they provide a comprehensive program of veterinary care, offer technical advice and assistance, and provide needed laboratory and research core services for teaching and research purposes.

Position Summary

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) offers an 18-month fellowship in comparative anatomic veterinary pathology, made possible by a generous donation from Charles River Laboratories, Inc (CRL). The position offers research and training opportunities that emphasize translational, computational, toxicologic, and digital pathology, as well as experience with advanced methodologies and related fields. At UNC, the Fellow will participate in diagnostic necropsies, support biomedical research, and receive mentorship from 4 board-certified veterinary pathologists. Additionally, practical toxicologic and digital pathology experience and mentorship through CRL provides the Fellow with skills essential for a successful modern career in veterinary pathology. Throughout the Fellowship, individuals will have the opportunity to participate in research using digital pathology, machine learning, deep learning, artificial intelligence, and digital image analysis. Other training opportunities include clinical rounds and staff meetings, Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) protocol and amendment review, research and resident seminars, an on-site clinical veterinary diagnostic laboratory, pathology sample collection management, seminars and courses offered by the Davis-Thompson Foundation, and continuing education offered at national meetings (AVMA, ACVP, STP, and others).

Minimum Education And Experience Requirements

Applicants must possess a DVM/VMD from an AVMA-accredited or equivalent institution, have completed at least 2 years of anatomic pathology residency training, and be eligible to take the American College of Veterinary Pathology’s phase II examination. Salary is based on the NIH post-doctoral scale and commensurate with experience.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, And Experience

DVM/VMD from an AVMA-accredited or equivalent institution

Completed at least 2 years of anatomic pathology residency training

Eligible to take the American College of Veterinary Pathology’s phase II examination

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, And Experience

Background with experiences showing a genuine interest in pursuing a career in laboratory animal/comparative medicine and/or research.
