Primary Purpose Of The Organizational Unit:

The University of North Carolina at Greensboro Facilities Operations Department has the responsibility of providing a wide range of services to all administrative departments, student activity programs, and all academic schools and departments. This department is a service organization comprised of skilled professionals dedicated to continuous maintenance, operation, and improvement of University facilities and grounds in order to provide a safe, clean, and well-functioning environment for all members of the University community. The Maintenance and Renovations Division of Facilities Operations is responsible for all building structure maintenance and project management, and design associated with the renovation of spaces.

Position Summary:

This position performs at a journey level for all of the carpentry duties associated with, but not limited to, the maintenance, alteration, and repair of University facilities, furnishings, and equipment.

This is a mandatory position as defined in the Adverse Weather and Emergency Event policy. Mandatory employees are expected to report to or remain at work during adverse weather and emergency events and, if deemed necessary, to work a different schedule or shift than normally assigned.

This position may also be required to participate in the On-Call and Emergency Callback program as outlined in the Facilities Operations Standard Operating Procedure.

Minimum Qualifications:

HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA OR EQUIVALENCY; OR DEMONSTRATED POSSESSION OF THE COMPETENCIES NECESSARY TO PERFORM THE WORK. OPTIONAL GUIDELINES: EXPERIENCE IN THE TRADE AREAS RELATED TO THE AREA OF ASSIGNMENT MAY BE SUBSTITUTED ON A YEAR-FOR-YEAR BASIS.

Additional Required Certifications, Licensures, And Certificates:

Valid driver’s license

Additional certification in operation of a 60 foot aerial work platform lift

Preferred Qualifications:

Preferred candidates should:

  • Have a minimum of 10 years of experience in the carpentry trade, including making and installing cabinets.
  • Have an excellent understanding of carpentry techniques and methods of installation and construction.
  • Be proficient in using electrical and manual equipment and measurement tools (powered saws, hammers, rulers, etc.).
  • Have an ability to read blueprints, drawings, and sketches.
  • Having previous work experience in a University setting would also be beneficial.

Alternate Option:

General Carpentry Responsibilities

Essential Tasks:

  • Excellent understanding of carpentry techniques and methods of installation and construction
  • Proficient in using electrical and manual equipment, and measurement tools (powered saws, hammers, rulers, etc.).
  • Ability to read blueprints, drawings, and sketches.
  • Take measurements and calculate the size and amount of material needed.
  • Cut, shape, and smooth lumber and other materials according to project requirements.
  • Build window frames, doors, staircases, decks, frame walls, etc., using raw materials or pre-constructed items.
  • Fabricate furniture, cabinets, shelves, and other items, and install them.
  • Lay out and install walls, flooring, drywall,l and other materials in a professional manner.
  • Perform carpentry and general building maintenance as required.
  • Work closely with the supervisor to develop detailed work methods and strategies for difficult or unusual assignments.

Maintenance and Construction Projects

Essential Tasks:

  • Works in support of in-house maintenance, renovation, and construction projects.
  • Submits labor and material reports to the supervisor.
  • Ensures enough materials are on hand for completion of the project.
  • Completes project per specifications and in a professional manner.
  • Ensures work is completed per building codes and University standards.
  • Safely completes and performs other tasks as assigned by the supervisor.

Performs Building and Shop Equipment Preventive Maintenance (PM)

Essential Tasks:

  • Performs PM tasks per the equipment manufacturer’s recommended schedule for building and shop equipment.
  • Continually evaluates PM tasks and forwards recommendations to the PM coordinator.
  • Performs PM inspections of all assigned areas.
  • Identifies and records any deficiencies found.
  • Initiates corrective work orders for repairs discovered during PM.
  • Completes corrective work orders.

Essential Tasks:

  • Provides the highest level of customer service possible, including keeping the customer updated throughout the work order process per the Service Request Communication SOP.
  • Develops a good working relationship with contacts.
  • Keeps the customer updated on work in progress and scheduled work, including completion dates.
  • Checks with the customer upon completion of work to see if the work was completed to their satisfaction.

  • Actively participates in all recommended training, including safety, and provides recommendations for any additional training as needed.
  • Operates equipment, lifts, ladders, tools, and vehicles in a safe manner and notifies supervisor of any potential safety issues.
  • Uses provided personal protective equipment (PPE) and requests replacement or additional PPE as required.
  • Follows all University and regulatory requirements and practices to ensure a safe working environment.
