Position Summary

The University of Alabama invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure, renewable-contract instructor position to be shared between the Department of American Culture and Society, the Department of Anthropology, and the Blount Scholars Program, a living learning community conferring a minor in Liberal Arts. The appointment is non-tenure-earning and is a one-year term with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory performance review, staffing needs, and funding.

Detailed Position Information

The University of Alabama invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure, renewable-contract instructor position to be shared between the Department of American Culture and Society, the Department of Anthropology, and the Blount Scholars Program, a living learning community conferring a minor in Liberal Arts. The appointment is non-tenure-earning and is a one-year term with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory performance review, staffing needs, and funding.

Candidates must have a doctorate in anthropology, concentrating in sociocultural anthropology, experience teaching courses in sociology and anthropology, and an active research agenda. The ideal candidate will also have a commitment to and experience teaching in a multidisciplinary, small-seminar, liberal arts curriculum. Applicants should have experience working with students to improve their writing skills (or with writing-intensive courses). Experience teaching in a living-learning community is highly desirable.

Teaching responsibilities in the department of American Culture and Society will include one course each semester in sociology.

Teaching responsibilities in Anthropology will include one course each semester in cultural anthropology at either the lower or upper level, focusing on art, religion, economics, politics and everyday life.

Teaching responsibilities in the Blount Program will include teaching two courses each semester in the first-year Foundations sequence (a year-long intellectual history survey in small seminar format comprising readings in philosophy, theology, political theory, literature, and scientific theory) and/or the senior Capstone Worldviews seminar (a multidisciplinary cultural theory course in which students produce a senior project), as well as occasional courses of the candidate’s own design.
