Inside Higher Ed
Charlotte, NC Full Time
POSTED ON 6/8/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 7/7/2026
Responsibilities

If you’re energized by teaching the game the right way—and just as committed to a student-athlete’s degree as her development—this role is for you. As Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach at Johnson C. Smith University, you’ll help shape a competitive, cohesive program that reflects JCSU’s values: toughness, unity, and academic excellence. You’ll have a real voice in daily practice design, scouting and game planning, recruiting strategy, and culture-building. You’ll also gain broad operations experience—from travel and logistics to communications and social media—so you’re growing as a complete coach and future program leader. Expect meaningful relationships, a collaborative staff, and a chance to make visible impact on and off the court.

What You’ll Do

Coaching & Player Development

  • Provide on-court instruction; assist with practice planning, weekly scouts, game-day prep, and in-game adjustments.
  • Lead out-of-season workouts and individualized development plans.

Student-Athlete Success

  • Develop and implement academic success initiatives; support retention and progress toward degree.
  • Participate in on-call rotations for room/curfew checks and student support.

Recruiting

  • Manage recruiting activities (on/off campus), official visits, and student-athlete hosts; build relationships with prospects, families, and high school/club coaches.

Operations & Logistics

  • Coordinate team travel and lodging (flights, hotels, buses, rental cars).
  • Organize game-day locker room, attire, equipment readiness, and appearance standards.
  • Supervise practice players and team managers; maintain equipment in good working order.

Scouting, Film & Data

  • Review game film; prepare scouting reports; track team and player performance metrics; maintain accurate statistics and records.

Team Culture, Community & Partnerships

  • Plan team activities, bonding, community service, and sponsorship engagement; support public relations and fundraising as needed.
  • Communicate regular updates to the Head Coach on performance, schedules, and operations.

Communications & Marketing

  • Collaborate with University Communications & Marketing and Athletics to manage the team’s social media presence.
  • Oversee graphics, photos, and video content; maintain photo/video libraries (department drives/Google Drive).
  • Plan and post promotions, create event pages, run live/social engagement during events, and review analytics to improve reach and impact.
  • Cross-promote campus events in partnership with University Communications & Marketing.

Compliance & Standards

  • Maintain current knowledge of and full compliance with NCAA, CIAA, and JCSU rules, policies, and procedures.

You’ll Thrive Here If You Are

  • Teacher-minded and development-driven: Clear, constructive, and detail-sharp in coaching fundamentals.
  • Organized and operations-savvy: Strong with travel planning, schedules, equipment, and documentation.
  • Recruiting-fluent: Relationship-builder who can identify fit, communicate value, and close the loop.
  • Student-centered: Invested in academic progress, well-being, and accountability.
  • Digital-ready: Comfortable with film tools and social media best practices to engage our community.

Qualifications
