General Summary Of Position

The Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (MIE) at the University of Massachusetts Lowell (UMass Lowell) invites applications for a full-time Assistant Teaching Professor position starting in September 2026. We seek a candidate dedicated to excellence in teaching and student success across the department’s programs. Applicants should demonstrate the ability to provide high-quality instruction in one or more of the following areas: engineering design (including first-year design, CAD, manufacturing, and/or upper-level design courses), electronics and electromechanical systems, thermofluids and laboratory instruction, or other fields within mechanical and industrial engineering.

The successful candidate will join the department and college faculty and be responsible for teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses, engaging in curriculum development, contributing to professional activities, and participating in relevant departmental and university service, including outreach. Teaching faculty play a crucial role in promoting the department’s educational mission, engaging students in experiential learning, and fostering a diverse and inclusive academic community.

UMass Lowell is a nationally recognized public research university experiencing rapid growth. The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) ranks UMass Lowell as the top public university in Massachusetts and the best in the state for both “Best Value” and social mobility. We are a Carnegie R1 research university, and our students benefit from the UML Guarantee—every first-time, first-year student can participate in at least one paid, credit-bearing, or career-connected experience. Our inclusive campus has received the Higher Education Excellence and Distinction (HEED) Award six times, and UMass Lowell is the Commonwealth’s only AASHE STARS Platinum institution (Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System (STARS) from the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) —one of only a few worldwide. In addition to strong graduate outcomes, 95% of graduates find their next step within months. These awards reflect a culture that combines research excellence with a focus on student success.

Within the Francis College of Engineering, faculty are part of an ABET-accredited, industry-engaged community that includes biomedical, chemical, civil, environmental, electrical, plastics, mechanical, and computer engineering. Our college has more than 3,000 undergraduate and graduate students, with 20 percent identifying as female and 25 percent as underrepresented minorities in engineering. Collaboration is at the heart of our research environment: the New England Robotics Validation and Experimentation (NERVE) Center advances robotics and human–robot interaction; the Fabric Discovery Center connects advanced textiles to health and defense; the Raytheon–UMass Lowell Research Institute (RURI) and Printed Electronics Research Collaborative (PERC) promote the development of next-generation electronics; and our campus-wide Core Research Facilities offer open access to over 100 instruments and expert staff. Hands-on spaces like the Lin MakerSpace and entrepreneurship programs such as DifferenceMaker encourage discovery and real-world impact. At its core, we are a university dedicated to student success and growth.

The MIE Department has over 30 faculty members and more than 1,000 undergraduate and graduate students. It offers B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in both Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, as well as M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Energy Engineering, a Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering, and an M.S. in Engineering Management.
