Location

Our West Campus is located at 2400 Gillionville Road, Albany, GA 31707. Our East Campus is located at 504 College Drive, Albany, GA 31705. The Human Resources office for both campuses is located on the West Campus in Building K, Suite 209.

Job Summary

Albany State University invites applications for the position of Assistant Provost for Faculty Affairs. Reporting directly to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Assistant Provost for Faculty Affairs serves as a key member of the Academic Affairs leadership team and provides strategic oversight and administrative coordination for all matters related to faculty recruitment, development, evaluation, and retention. This position supports a thriving faculty community dedicated to student success, scholarly excellence, and institutional mission at one of Georgia's premier Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

Responsibilities

Faculty Recruitment & Hiring

  • Coordinate and provide oversight for faculty searches university-wide, ensuring compliance with equal opportunity and affirmative action principles.
  • Partner with deans, department chairs, and Human Resources to develop and implement equitable and inclusive faculty hiring practices.
  • Maintain and continuously improve policies and procedures governing faculty appointments, including tenure-track, tenured, and non-tenure-track lines.

Promotion, Tenure & Evaluation

  • Administer the university's promotion and tenure process, ensuring procedural integrity, timeliness, and consistency across academic units.
  • Serve as a resource and advisor to faculty, department chairs, and deans on promotion and tenure policies, criteria, and documentation expectations.
  • Coordinate post-tenure review and annual faculty performance evaluation processes.

Faculty and Professional Development

  • Develop, implement, and assess a comprehensive, institution-wide faculty development strategy that supports faculty at all career stages from pre-tenure through senior faculty and post-tenure renewal.
  • Design and facilitate new faculty orientation and onboarding programs that acclimate incoming faculty to ASU's culture, mission, resources, and expectations.
  • Coordinate mentoring programs that connect early-career faculty with experienced colleagues across disciplines, fostering community and reducing isolation.
  • Curate and deliver professional development programming in areas including teaching and learning innovation, scholarly productivity, grant writing, curriculum design, and the integration of emerging technologies (including AI) into pedagogy and research.
  • Partner with the Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence (or equivalent unit) to align faculty development initiatives with institutional priorities and student success outcomes.
  • Identify and facilitate faculty participation in external professional development opportunities, including conferences, workshops, leadership institutes, and fellowship programs offered through AASCU, UNCF, HBCU-focused networks, and disciplinary associations.
  • Develop targeted development pathways for department chairs and other academic leaders, including leadership coaching, management skills, and shared governance training.
  • Administer and steward faculty development funding, including travel grants, research support, and professional development awards, ensuring equitable access across academic units.
  • Establish and maintain a sabbatical leave program and other opportunities for faculty scholarly renewal, ensuring alignment with USG policies and institutional needs.
  • Collect, analyze, and report data on faculty development participation and outcomes to inform continuous program improvement and support accreditation and institutional effectiveness reporting.
  • Cultivate partnerships with peer institutions, professional organizations, and community stakeholders to expand and diversify professional development resources available to ASU faculty.

Faculty Policy & Governance

  • Serve as the Provost's designee on faculty affairs matters and maintain close collaboration with the Faculty Senate and other shared governance bodies.
  • Interpret, apply, and recommend updates to faculty-related policies in the Faculty Handbook and Academic Affairs policy framework.
  • Ensure institutional compliance with University System of Georgia (USG) Board of Regents policies and procedures related to faculty.

Workload, Staffing & Data

  • Oversee faculty workload policies and assist academic units in developing equitable workload assignments.
  • Maintain accurate faculty data and generate reports in support of accreditation, institutional effectiveness, and strategic planning.
  • Assist with the management of faculty lines, positions, and budgetary planning in collaboration with the Provost's Office.

Leadership & Collaboration

  • Contribute to the strategic priorities of the Division of Academic Affairs as a member of the Provost's leadership team.
  • Foster a culture of inclusivity, transparency, and shared governance in all faculty affairs matters.
  • Represent the Provost's Office on university committees and task forces as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Earned terminal degree in an academic discipline.
  • A record of teaching and scholarly achievement sufficient for appointment at the rank of associate or full professor in an ASU academic department.
  • Significant administrative experience in academic affairs, faculty affairs, or a closely related area within higher education.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of faculty personnel processes, including recruitment, evaluation, promotion, and tenure.
  • Experience designing or leading faculty development or professional development programming.
  • Strong commitment to the mission of HBCUs and to serving diverse student and faculty populations.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working within the University System of Georgia or a comparable public university system.
  • Demonstrated success building or scaling faculty development infrastructure, including mentoring programs, new faculty orientation, and leadership development pipelines.
  • Familiarity with evidence-based approaches to faculty development, including coaching models, communities of practice, and reflective practice frameworks.
  • Experience with accreditation processes (e.g., SACSCOC) and institutional effectiveness reporting.
  • Familiarity with shared governance structures and faculty senate engagement.
  • Record of advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion in faculty affairs.
  • Experience securing or administering grants or external funding in support of faculty development.

Proposed Salary

Salary is commensurate with education and experience.

This position is based in the Office of Academic Affairs at Albany State University. Some evening and weekend availability may be required in support of faculty events, academic program reviews, governance activities, and institutional initiatives. Occasional travel may be required for professional development, system-level meetings, or representation of the university at regional and national conferences.
