Primary Purpose Of The Organizational Unit:

The mission of the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships at UNCG is to assist students in reaching their academic goals by serving as as primary advocates for students and families as we assist in removing barriers to receiving financial assistance. The Financial Aid Office works to meet these goals by embracing technology, reviewing and improving procedures, and ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations.

Position Summary:

The Assistant Director for Loan Processing role requires the coordination and administration of the Federal Direct Loan Program, private education loan processing, award generation/revisions, verification of the appropriate disbursement of loan funds, and ensuring that loan eligibility is maintained throughout the financial aid process. This position is required to lead/contribute to the development and implementation of awarding guidelines and policies and procedures and serves as the primary subject matter expert and loan knowledge resource for the office. In addition to their supporting the office, the position is responsible for the training and supervision of one permanent SHRA employee (Loan and Accounting Senior Financial Aid Counselor). Oversight of the Loan programs is a highly compliance-related position where there is a high likely of a state/federal audit review. Accuracy, expert knowledge of state/federal regulations, problem solving skill, and an aptitude for attention to detail are critical skills in this role.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and 3-5 years of experience in financial aid, higher education, or a related field.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree and 2 years of relevant financial aid experience.

Key Responsibility:

Direct Loan Program Oversight and Processing

Essential Tasks:

  • Oversees the end‑to‑end processing of Federal Direct Subsidized, Unsubsidized, and PLUS Loans to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and regulatory compliance.
  • Monitors Direct Loan origination, disbursement, reconciliation, and reporting activities in coordination with Student Accounts and the U.S. Department of Education.
  • Supports the resolution of complex Direct Loan issues related to eligibility conflicts, over awards, impacts from the return of Title IV funds (R2T4), and post-disbursement adjustments.
  • Ensures accurate setup and maintenance of loan parameters, academic year definitions, and disbursement schedules in the student information system.

Private Educational Loan Administration

Essential Tasks:

  • Administers institutional processes for private educational loans in accordance with Truth in Lending Act (TILA) requirements and institutional policies.
  • Reviews and certifies private loan requests to confirm cost of attendance, eligibility, and compliance with federal and state consumer disclosure requirements.
  • Coordinates with lenders, servicers, and students to resolve private loan certification and disbursement issues.

  • Interprets, implements, and enforces federal Title IV regulations, U.S. Department of Education guidance, and applicable North Carolina policies related to student loans.
  • Develops, maintains, and documents loan‑related policies and procedures to support compliance, consistency, and audit readiness.
  • Leads preparation for internal reviews, state or federal program reviews, and annual audits related to Direct and private loans.
  • Monitors regulatory changes and recommends operational updates to ensure ongoing compliance and risk mitigation.

Reporting, Analysis, and Leadership Support

Essential Tasks:

  • Analyzes loan volume, default risk indicators, and processing trends to inform operational and strategic decision‑making.
  • Prepares loan‑related reports and recommendations for the Associate Director of Financial Aid Operations.
  • Supports office‑wide initiatives to improve efficiency, compliance, and student service outcomes.

Supervision and Staff Development

Essential Tasks:

  • Supervises, trains, and evaluates the Senior Financial Aid Counselor responsible for Direct Loan processing to ensure high performance and regulatory adherence.
  • Provides guidance and quality control oversight to support the department in providing accurate counseling, processing, and customer service.
  • Fosters staff development through coaching, cross‑training, and clear performance expectations.

Student and Campus Engagement

  • Advises students and families on loan options, borrowing limits, repayment obligations, and responsible debt management.
  • Collaborates with campus partners to support financial literacy initiatives and consistent loan messaging.
  • Serves as a loan subject‑matter expert for the Office of Financial Aid and related campus stakeholders.
