Primary Purpose Of The Organizational Unit:

The purpose of the International Programs Center (IPC) is to coordinate and develop the University’s international activities and to advance the University’s comprehensive internationalization goals as stated in its Strategic Plan. Specific activities include: developing and managing education abroad programs; providing support services to degree seeking (F1) and exchange (J1) international students and to visiting international scholars; and developing and managing outreach programs to the campus and local community.

The International Programs Center financially supports international-related study, research, and projects for students, faculty, and staff with generous support from donors. IPC serves as the liaison for the Interlink Language Program and for New Mind Education activities on campus. IPC oversees the management of a position that supports the internationalization goals of all 16 UNC System institutions.

Position Summary:

The Assistant Director of Study Abroad and Exchange Programs will serve as a study abroad advisor to and coordinator for 200 students. This means working with all levels of administrative units and faculty members. Interaction with students, parents, and administrators is paramount to this position. The person in this position will advise students who are planning to go on any type of study abroad program (short-term partner, faculty-led, semester, and year-long exchange programs).

They will also work closely with the Faculty-led Coordinator and the Incoming Exchange Student Coordinator (regarding students coming to UNC Greensboro for semester or year-long exchange programs). They will advise outgoing study abroad students by identifying appropriate study abroad site options, ensuring coursework consistency with students’ current academic goals, transferring credits, determining financial aid applicability, and programming re-departure orientation. They will act as a UNC Greensboro liaison for students while they are abroad to ensure that they are appropriately enrolled upon return to UNC Greensboro. They will assist in conducting pre-departure and re-entry workshops to facilitate student adjustment, re-integration, and career plans. This person will also assist with partnership relations and agreement management efforts.

The Assistant Director will report directly to, and work with, the Associate Director of Study Abroad and Exchange Programs to administer and expand UNC Greensboro’s Study Abroad and Exchange Programs. While reporting directly to the Associate Director, the Assistant Director will also work closely with and be advised by the Associate Provost for International Programs.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A master’s degree, or a bachelor’s degree and an equivalent amount of education and experience, is required.
  • Outstanding intercultural sensitivity, exemplary written & verbal competency, and excellent computer skills.
  • The incumbent must be able to relate to students of diverse backgrounds and work effectively with multiple administrative and academic offices.
  • Five years of prior experience working in the international education field at a higher education institution.
  • This position requires the ability to develop and interpret health and safety policies and procedures and advise stakeholders accordingly.
  • Ability to manage time effectively, work independently, and multi-task in a fast-paced environment with frequent deadlines.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with supervisors, coworkers, faculty and staff, community leaders, third party entities, and counterparts in partner institutions.
  • Detail oriented with excellent organizational skills.
  • High standards of professionalism needed to represent UNCG and the IPC effectively both domestically and abroad.
  • Willingness to periodically travel domestically and abroad.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree with an international focus or in a related field.
  • Experience working, living, and/or studying abroad.
  • Experience working in a public higher educational system like UNC would be advantageous to this position.
  • Experience advising international students on J-1 visas and an understanding of the SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information Systems) database.
  • Experience managing international exchange agreements.
  • Familiarity with Terra Dotta or other study abroad data management system.
  • Familiarity with Banner.

Special Instructions To Applicants:

UNC Greensboro supports 480 students each year engaging in a wide variety of education abroad opportunities. The Assistant Director of Study Abroad will serve as a study abroad advisor to and coordinator for 200 students.

The Assistant Director reports to the Director of Study Abroad unit and works with other study abroad professional staff and student assistants to administer and expand UNC Greensboro’s education abroad options including study abroad, exchange, and research opportunities.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

The Assistant Director is responsible for:

  • Advising students interested in education abroad programs from the initial advising phase to return.
  • Recruiting, advising, selecting, and conducting orientation for outbound education abroad students.
  • Maintaining student exchange balances, administering travel grant programs, and coordinating transfer of credit.
  • Maintaining the Terra Dotta platform for application and program management.
  • Assisting in the development of promotional and informational materials including web pages, social media sites, brochures, handbooks, and videos that enhance student advising
  • Providing insight on best practices in academic integration, diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts, intercultural components, travel and security, and risk management, etc.
  • Providing support to department liaisons and fostering peer-to-peer engagement among faculty liaisons.
  • Developing workshops, presentations, and class visits.
  • Supervising student assistants.
  • Ensuring evaluations of all education abroad programs.
  • Assisting with global agreements to build partnership relationships (as needed).
  • Implementing requisite administrative procedures.
  • Completing duties as determined appropriate for the level of this position.

Essential Tasks:

  • Supporting the Study Abroad and Exchanges team as an education abroad advisor as needed. In addition to working one-on-one in an advising role with students, the advisor will follow students all the way through the initial advising phase and continue as advisor through pre-departure and upon return and transfer of credit.
  • The person will also be responsible for supporting all activities relating to education abroad including recruiting, interviewing, selecting, and conducting orientation for outgoing education abroad students, as well as maintaining student exchange balances, administering the travel grant program, and coordinating transfer of credit.
  • Assisting in the development of promotional and informational materials including web pages, social media sites, brochures, handbooks, and videos that enhance student advising.

  • Responsible for analyzing risks abroad and providing updates and detailed strategies to mitigate risks.
  • Developing policies and procedures for health and safety, risk reduction, and crisis management.
  • Serving in an “on-call” capacity to respond to international emergencies.
  • Collaborating with relevant local and global partners to establish emergency communication protocols to be shared with faculty, staff, and students.
