The Assistant Director’s role is to support the 15,000 students living in the residence halls by collaborating with stakeholders, providing opportunities to foster involvement, civic engagement and student success, to enhance the experience of residential students. It contributes directly towards the department’s educational priority as part of the residential curriculum to help students become self-aware and accountable in working towards a society which honors and advocates for all individuals. Moreover, this position plays a key role in the continued enhancement and maintenance of HRE’s residentially based curriculum, designed to facilitate an environment that centers student learning and growth. The Assistant Director chairs the committee which advances the departmental learning goals and outcomes through collaborative partnerships with other offices in Student Life and Academic Affairs, ongoing learning and development for internal HRE staff, and ensuring the learning goals and outcomes are embedded throughout HRE processes, procedures, and communication. This position remains current on best practices using a curricular approach in a residential setting. This position is responsible for the strategic management and ongoing enhancement of StarRez, the department’s housing and educational technology platform. The Assistant Director ensures that StarRez functionality aligns with and supports the residential curriculum by leading system-related projects, coordinating with IT and Housing Administration on configuration and deployment, and maintaining high-level knowledge of the platform. This role requires the ability to integrate learning goals into housing processes through effective use of StarRez and continuous system improvements.

As a part of the Learning and Involvement team (LIT), this position oversees collaboration between HRE and academic units for 3-5 living-learning communities (LLCs), serving as a consultant for best practices in LLCs, ensuring adequate planning and management of the programs, and helping troubleshoot challenges that may arise in implementation. The Assistant Director ensures that practices adhere to university budgets and other relevant protocols and procedures, assists in continuity planning for staff transitions, and provides support, as needed for their respective LLCs. This role also contributes to overall team efforts that support connections between HRE and the academic mission of the university for students. In particular, this role provides additional support for the development of faculty-related initiatives that help create co-curricular spaces for connection with faculty in the residence hall environment. The Assistant Director role is part of the HRE leadership team, supervises one professional staff member who is part of LIT and reports to an Associate Director in HRE. This position attends evening and weekend events, works closely with partners in Student Life and Academic Affairs and is knowledgeable about a variety of campus resources to best improve student engagement and success in their residential environments.
