Anticipated Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 6:45-3:15PM or 7:00-3:30PM

The Veterinary Service Center (VSC) at Stanford University provides Laboratory Animal Care and operates within the Department of Comparative Medicine. We are fully accredited by the Association for Accreditation and Assessment of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC). Our vision is to pioneer in laboratory animal care, driving research innovations from bench to bedside.

The Veterinary Service Center within the Department of Comparative Medicine is seeking an Animal Care Assistant IV to serve as team lead and provide advanced care and husbandry for a variety of animal species in complex facilities.

The expected pay range for this position is $38.48 to $46.33/hour.

Desired Qualifications

  • American Association for Laboratory Animal Sciences (AALAS) certification as a Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) or higher.
  • Experience and success in a Lead Role.
  • Experience and success in establishing productive relationships within a diverse research community that reflects a strong “client service” commitment.
  • Strong inventory management systems experience.
  • Strong computer skills with applications like Microsoft Excel.
  • Strong written and verbal communication in English.

Education & Experience (required)

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Five years of applicable animal care experience in a research or animal laboratory environment or a combination of equivalent education and work experience

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities (required)

  • In addition to the qualifications described for the Animal Care Assistant III level the Animal Care Assistant IVs should have:
  • Computer experience in order to create and/or maintain records, spreadsheets, inventory systems and other documents.
  • Familiarity with OLAW and U.S.D.A. guidelines.
  • Ability to read, write, understand, communicate, and follow written and oral instructions provided in English.
  • Experience with the use and maintenance of large animal facility related machinery.
  • Strong computer skills with a demonstrated ability to work with Microsoft Office and email applications are required.
  • Experience working with a web-based applications such as inventory management.
  • Ability to work independently as well as on a team and possess a strong sense of personal accountability.
  • Mechanical ability, manual dexterity, and personal standards of cleanliness, neatness, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to establish productive relationships within a diverse research community that reflects a strong “client service” commitment is essential.

Certifications & Licenses

  • When driving, must have a valid California non-Commercial Class C license.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

  • Often lift and carry materials weighing up to 40 lbs.
  • Frequently handle materials up to 20 lb .Occasionally carry/pull up to 60 pounds, push over 60 pounds
  • Walk/stand for long periods.
  • Bend, squat, reach above shoulder level.
  • Often use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls.
  • Required vision abilities including close, distance, color, peripheral and depth perception.
  • Ability to talk and to hear

Additional PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be capable of lifting and moving cages, feed, supplies, and equipment of at least 50 pounds.

Working Conditions

  • May be required to work overtime, evenings and weekends, including Holidays, sometimes in inclement weather conditions.
  • Work in direct contact with animals and all components of animal housing and animal research environment.
  • May require working with or being in areas where hazardous materials, animal allergens and/or infectious diseases are present. Specific hazards include, but are not limited to: zoonosis, chemicals, pesticides, and solvents. May be exposed to dust, fumes or gases, chemicals or toxic substances.
  • Must perform tasks that require the use of personal protective equipment, such as safety glasses and shoes, protective clothing, and gloves; may require use of a respirator.

Additional WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Expected to follow all safety requirements and procedures.
  • Must be free of animal-related allergies.
  • Responsible for the wearing, use and proper care of uniforms, supplies, and equipment provided by VSC. Including uniforms required for health & safety purposes.
  • Must have a valid California non-Commercial Class C license.
  • Work occurs in a secured facility, in an environment where animals are used for teaching and research.
  • The incumbent will be required to complete an initial and annual Occupational Health Surveillance questionnaire and may be required to undergo a physical examination and/or immunizations.
