Organizational Unit Overview

The Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences encompasses 15 academic departments, offering majors across the Social Sciences, Humanities, Natural Sciences, and Mathematics. Students benefit from flexible curricula that encourage thoughtful course selection and sequencing, enabling them to tailor their academic experience at East Carolina University. This flexibility supports opportunities to pursue double majors, minors, and certificate programs.

Job Duties

The primary role of the Academic Advisor is to provide effective advising to students intending to major in one or more of the departments within the college.

The Academic Advisor in this role will provide comprehensive guidance to students from initial enrollment through graduation. The advisor will offer timely, accurate information and support to help students make informed academic decisions, while collaborating closely with faculty mentors to enhance student development and overall academic success.

Approximately 90% of the position is focused on providing effective academic advising to students pursuing majors within HCAS. This includes assisting students with making appropriate course selections, guiding students towards major and career exploration, educating students on various academic policies and procedures, keeping students aware of important deadlines, and referring students to various resources as needed. Other duties may include teaching a section of COAD 1000, the freshman seminar course, assisting with graduation ceremonies, etc.

Approximately 10% of the position will focus on recruitment and retention events such as Open House, Pirates Aboard, new student orientations, and other college/university student recruitment events.

ACADEMIC ADVISING

  • Support students in exploring and selecting academic majors and career pathways aligned with their goals and interests.
  • Assist students to develop and refine course schedules that align with degree requirements, support steady academic progress, and promote timely, efficient completion of their programs.
  • Facilitate understanding of academic requirements including general education and program requirements so students can effectively plan and take responsibility for their progress towards timely graduation.
  • Provide information and guidance on university policies, including key deadlines, procedures, graduation requirements, academic standing, and course registration processes, so students can take responsibility for understanding and adhering to them.
  • Work with students to promote accountability for their academic success by helping them identify challenges, develop strategies for improvement, and take ownership of their progress toward graduation.
  • Advocate for students’ needs by serving as a supportive advocate, helping students navigate challenges related to academic performance, personal circumstances, or institutional barriers.
  • Connect students to appropriate university units, departments, resources and support services as needed.
  • Maintain regular communication with students to build strong, supportive relationships and provide academic guidance that encourages them to take ownership of their educational goals and decisions.
  • Encourage campus and community engagement by promoting involvement in social, volunteer, and civic activities as well as participation in major-related student organizations to enhance their collegiate experience and build a sense of community.
  • Work closely with faculty and staff to stay current on academic policies and updates, ensuring students receive accurate, consistent, and well-informed guidance.
  • Demonstrate teamwork, leadership, and initiative by actively contributing to advising center operations, collaborating with colleagues, and fostering a positive, supportive work environment while advancing continuous improvement efforts.
  • Promote lifelong learning. Encourage students to view their academic journey as part of a broader framework of personal and professional growth, emphasizing transferrable skills and continuous learning.
  • Utilize technology to support advising, maintain accurate records, communicate effectively with students.
  • Other duties as assigned which may include teaching the COAD Freshman Seminar, assisting with graduation ceremonies, creating programs, workshops, or other initiatives to enhance students’ academic performance, etc.

RECRUITMENT AND RETENTION

  • Engage in recruitment efforts. Actively participate in events such as Open House, Pirates Aboard, new student orientations, and department/college/university recruitment events to promote programs and attract prospective students.
  • Represent the University and THCAS. Serve as a knowledgeable and enthusiastic representative of the College of Arts & Sciences at recruitment events, highlighting the benefits and unique opportunities available to students.
  • Facilitate connections with prospective students. Build rapport with potential students and their families by answering questions, sharing success stories, and providing information on academic programs, student support services, and campus resources.
  • Support new student onboarding. Assist with the transition of new students into the university by participating in orientation sessions and offering guidance on course selection, degree planning, and student resources.
  • Contribute to retention strategies. Collaborate with faculty, staff, and administrators to implement initiatives that enhance student satisfaction, engagement, and academic success fostering retention.

Minimum Education/Experience

A Master’s degree is required. Qualifying degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

Two or more years of experience in counseling, advising, and/or teaching is preferred. Also, prefer that the Bachelor’s or Master’s degree be in a liberal arts or sciences discipline. Strong advising, interpersonal, analytical, and organizational skills. Computer skills and enjoy working in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
