ABOUT THE HOST SITE


Ingham County’s Office of Environmental Sustainability leads the County’s efforts to cut greenhouse gas emissions, embed sustainability across operations, and achieve net-zero government operations by 2040. The office develops and oversees the County’s Sustainability Action Plan, advances materials management initiatives, and coordinates climate and environmental programs guided by the principles of equity, environmental justice, resiliency, and transparency.

MEMBER IMPACT


Under the direction and supervision of the Environmental Sustainability Director, the Stakeholder Engagement Associate member will support the development of Ingham County’s Sustainability Action Plan (SAP) by leading the review, evaluation, and documentation of both community and internal operational engagement activities, recognizing the long-term health impacts of environmental sustainability as informing resident health and county decision-making. Utilizing a Health in All Policies approach, the member will engage all affected stakeholders. The member is responsible for analyzing completed engagement efforts, refining engagement strategies for operational implementation, and conducting operational engagement with County employees and departments that will inform development of the SAP. By directly contributing to the SAP to measurably reduce carbon emissions and implement sustainable environmental health practices, the member will address both environmental factors as social determinants of health, as well as improve long-term community health outcomes for Ingham County residents.



POSITION DETAILS



The Stakeholder Engagement Associate will perform a variety of duties including:



Responsibilities:



Research and Data Analysis


• Review and evaluate completed community engagement activities, including surveys, public meetings, and outreach efforts to understand environmental health-related concerns.

• Analyze engagement results to identify successes, gaps, trends, and opportunities for improvement.

• Assess the existing Stakeholder Engagement Plan (SEP) for alignment with past activities and operational goals.

• Recommend updates to the SEP and identify practical, scalable strategies to strengthen engagement activities.


Community Engagement and Data Collection


• Design, implement, and evaluate operational engagement activities such as feedback surveys, listening sessions, and focus groups, with County employees and departments to gather input on sustainability topics, priorities, and possible initiatives, utilizing a Health in All Policies approach.

• Select and designate appropriate platforms and locations for listening sessions or community feedback and obtain participant consent.

• Identify, reach out to, and build relationships with peer organizations, County departments (including the Health Department) and employees, and other stakeholders to support objectives.

• Ensure the operational engagement approach aligns with the revised Stakeholder Engagement Plan (SEP).

• Identify methods, tools, and processes to engage internal stakeholders effectively, ensuring meaningful participation and actionable feedback.

Communications and Reporting


• Develop and manage communication plans, schedules, and outreach strategies to support engagement activities.

• Create and distribute marketing and educational materials (e.g., flyers, brochures, infographics) to promote participation and awareness.

• Conduct virtual and in-person outreach and presentations to County staff, departments, and leadership.

• Maintain organized content, assets, and records while ensuring brand consistency across communications.

• Track communication metrics and evaluate effectiveness to inform and improve future outreach efforts.

• Compile and synthesize engagement findings into reports, providing clear, actionable insights to support Sustainability Action Plan (SAP) development.


Minimum Knowledge and Skills


• Some experience or education in public health, community health, policy, community engagement, environmental sustainability, or related field

• Proficiency with common communication tools (such as Microsoft Office, basic content creation tools, Adobe Office, Canva, etc.)

• Some experience with health and sustainability research

• Strong written and verbal communication skills

• Ability to work independently when appropriate


Desired Knowledge and Skills


• 1 year of experience in public health, community engagement, or environmental sustainability

• Familiarity with engagement, communication, and promotional strategies

• Experience with data management and maintaining confidentiality of data


Service Conditions:


• Hybrid in-person/teleservice.

• In-person location: Ingham County Hilliard Building 121 E. Maple, Mason, MI 48854. Service at a minimum of two days per week must be in-person. Schedule may include other days in-person, flexibility based on agreement with site supervisors

• Ingham County Environmental Sustainability Office will provide laptop and Microsoft 360; member is responsible for their own alternative work site equipment outside of the previously listed items.

• In-person environment: shared office space with other County employees; may be required to be off-site at local community agencies.

• Members are required to have reliable transportation


Service Schedule:


• Service at a minimum of two days per week must be in-person, flexibility based on agreement with the site supervisor.

• A regular service schedule will be determined between the hours of 8 am and 5 pm. Schedule flexibility can be shifted based on agreements with the site supervisors.

• Occasional evening hours for engagement activities and public meetings.

• Members are required to participate and attend monthly ICHD Public Health AmeriCorps professional development, quarterly ICHD AmeriCorps professional development, participate in events including national service days, and regional and local service projects

• Sick or personal days are allowed, but members lose possible days to earn the required number of hours needed to successfully complete the term of service. There are additional benefits offered if the member has a compelling personal circumstance


AMERICORPS PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS


• Participate in monthly ICHD PHA AmeriCorps Training and Professional Development in topics like grant-writing and resume development

• Participate in National Days of Service (9/11 Day of Service, MLK Day of Service, Russ Mawby Regional Day of Service, Youth Volunteer Day)

• Attend AmeriCorps orientation at the Ingham County Health Department

• All members will participate in an end of service performance evaluation

• All members will be required to submit bi-weekly time sheets, quarterly data reports, and all other data tasks requested by the Host Site


Public Health AmeriCorps Members should possess:


• a desire and ability to work with a diverse group of people;

• a willingness to learn and serve others;

• an ability to work independently and in a team environment successfully, and

• strong organizational, writing, and oral communication skills, and a high attention to detail


AmeriCorps Program Eligibility


• be 17 years or older at the start of service (no upper age limit)

• be a U.S. citizen, U.S. National, or Lawful Permanent Resident Alien

• Agree to and pass a national service criminal history check with eligibility verification in accordance with 45 CFR 2540.202.
