The Role

The Skillbridge intern will train as a Environmental Hazmat Technician within Ingalls Shipbuilding, reporting to a designated HII Supervisor, with the goal of learning Environmental Hazmat Technician basics and principles. The intern will be assigned special projects as needed.

Desired End State (3-4 month target)

  • At the end of four months, the intern will be able to use predetermined methods, operations, setups and prescribed specifications to support the Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) department by conducting inspections and ensuring regulatory compliance in an industrial setting.
  • The intern will develop a good understanding of the inspection and regulatory process. This includes:
    • Monitoring satellite accumulation areas, hazardous waste tanks, paint shop drums, air emission sources, and chemical handling practices
    • Ensuring adherence to federal, state, and local regulations such as EPA, RCRA, CAA, CWA, DOT, and OSHA, while maintaining accurate documentation and supporting internal audits
    • Spill response, waste manifest tracking, and collaboration with other departments to resolve nonconformances
    • Strong attention to detail, knowledge of environmental regulations, and the ability to work in industrial environments with appropriate PPE
    • Hazardous materials handling
  • Ingalls Shipbuilding will benefit from the military background of the Skillbridge intern and considers the Skillbridge internship an overall positive experience.
Assumptions/Restrictions

  • If candidate is selected and approved, Skillbridge Intern can travel in conjunction with this internship; HII Ingalls will fund all travel costs.
  • Skillbridge Intern will possess at minimum an Active confidential Security Clearance.
  • Skillbridge Intern will be available during core hours for critical meetings and training.

Phase 1 - Basics

  • Week 1: Company Introductions
  • Week 2: Hazmat Basics; Policy & Procedures
  • Week 3: Inspection Documentation/Database Management
  • Week 4: Hands-On Practice – Inspecting

Phase 2 – Process Understanding

  • Week 5: Universal Waste Overview
  • Week 6: Hazardous Waste Determination/Area Inspection
  • Week 7: Hazardous Waste Loadouts
  • Week 8: Satellite Accumulation Areas (SAA’s)/Central Accumulation Areas (CAA’s)

Phase 3 – Hazardous Waste, Resource Recovery, Customer Feedback

  • Week 9: Corrective & Preventive Actions
  • Week 10: Solid Waste, Waste Oil, Scrap Operations
  • Week 11: Solo Inspections, Waste Audit Participation
  • Week 12: Feedback & Coaching
  • Week 13: Next Steps

Must Have

Must be a transitioning active-duty military personnel with their final 12 months of active-duty service.
