Business Development Lead - Defense Industry
Position Overview
We are seeking a motivated, self-starting, experienced Business Development Lead to manage and execute growth initiatives within the defense sector. The ideal candidate will identify new business opportunities, develop relationships with government, military, and defense industry stakeholders, manage capture efforts, and support contract acquisition processes.
This role requires deep knowledge of defense procurement cycles, government contracting requirements and regulations, and strong engagement capabilities with armed forces, prime contractors, and international defense agencies.
Key Responsibilities
1. Strategic Business Growth
- Identify and pursue new business opportunities within defense markets (Army, Navy, Air Force, Homeland Security).
- Develop and execute strategic account plans aligned with company growth objectives.
- Analyze market trends, competitor positioning, and emerging defense technologies.
2. Government & Military Engagement
- Build and maintain relationships with defense entities, procurement agencies, and armed forces.
- Represent the company at defense exhibitions (e.g., Defense and Security Equipment International, AUSA Annual Meeting & Exposition).
- Coordinate meetings, product demonstrations, and capability briefings.
3. Capture & Proposal Management
- Identify leads and execute customer call plans.
- Lead capture strategies for RFIs, RFPs, and tenders.
- Work closely with technical, engineering, and legal teams to prepare compliant proposals.
- Negotiate contracts in accordance with government acquisition regulations.
4. Partnership & Channel Development
- Develop relationships and partnerships with prime contractors such as Lockheed Martin, BAE Systems, and Raytheon Technologies.
- Establish local industrial partnerships for offset obligations where applicable.
5. Compliance & Regulatory Management
- Ensure adherence to export control regulations (e.g., ITAR, EAR).
- Maintain compliance with government procurement policies and security requirements.
- Support licensing and certification processes.
6. Revenue & Pipeline Management
- Develop and manage multi-year sales pipelines.
- Forecast revenue and report progress to executive leadership.
- Achieve assigned sales and growth targets.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, Business, International Relations, or related field.
- 5–12 years of demonstrated experience in business development within defense, aerospace, or government contracting.
- Proven track record of winning government contracts.
- Strong understanding of defense acquisition processes.
- Experience working with ministries of defense or armed forces.
- Ability to obtain and maintain security clearance (if required).
Preferred Skills
- Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills.
- Knowledge of defense technologies (C4ISR, UAVs, radar systems, armored systems, cybersecurity).
- International defense market experience.
- Familiarity with NATO procurement frameworks (if applicable).
