What are the responsibilities and job description for the Recreational Therapy Director position at Indigo Manor Nursing and Rehab?

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1.Demonstrates knowledge of age specific developmental factors specific to adult and geriatric residents (i.e. physical, cognitive, and socialization factors) in planning activity programs.

2.Demonstrates knowledge, skills, and techniques necessary to plan activities for residents with the following needs: therapeutic, neuro & dementia, dialysis, IV therapy, and infectious diseases if applicable.

3.Attends all mandatory in-services by the employee’s anniversary date.

4.Acts appropriately under the direction of the Administrator and acts as an active member of the interdisciplinary team.

5.Demonstrates ability to adjust to changes in unit/shift assignments to meet resident and family needs.

6.Communicates and observes the Corporate Compliance program effectively and complies with Code of Conduct when performing work functions.

A.Administrative/Resident Care Responsibilities:

1.Directs other activity personnel in implementing activity programs and services at the facility. Assists in training, teaching and directing of volunteers and students.

2.Provides all Department Heads with a schedule of planned activity programs and posts calendars in conspicuous locations easily accessible and legible to the residents and staff.

3.Provides the Administrator with a monthly statistical report of the number of planned activities and participates in inservice programs as appropriate.

4.Maintains a system of records including information on residents, progress notes, attendance, discharge summaries, Resident Council meeting minutes, activity assessments and plans for each resident.

5.Attends Care Plan conferences and identifies problems and develops goals and approaches for inclusion on the Care Plan.

6.Conducts in-service programs related to activities policies and procedures for activities staff and facility staff as appropriate.

7.Interviews new residents upon admission to identify their needs and interest in various activity programs.

8.Provides personal services for residents such as writing letters, mailing packages and transporting them to community events when transportation is available.

9.Delegates assignments to activity staff for smooth functioning of activity programs.

10.Processes progress reports of residents in charts at nurses’ station.

11.Decorates facility with seasonal décor, including holiday decorations.

12.Performs various Quality Assurance audits.

13.Requisitions equipment and supplies to conduct activity programs. Conducts inventory audits and prepares yearly budget for Activities.

14.Performs light housekeeping tasks, such as clean-up after parties and programs, when necessary.

15.Works with the Administrator in maintaining established Activity standards.

B.Role Responsibilities-Interpersonal Skills:

1.Is aware of, and adheres to, Resident’s Bill of Rights and Confidentiality of Resident Information.

2.Interacts with residents and family members, co-workers, clinical and ancillary staff in a non-judgmental, supportive and calm manner.

3.Addresses resident and family satisfaction issues immediately by reporting them to the Supervisor in a professional manner.

4.Is aware of Resident Abuse Reporting Law.

5.Participates as assigned in the orientation of new staff and demonstrates a positive, helpful, and enthusiastic attitude.

C.Role Responsibilities-Safety:

1.Demonstrates ability to locate emergency equipment (i.e. fire extinguisher, oxygen equipment, etc.).

2.Understands and demonstrates knowledge of role in Fire and Disaster drills.

3.Demonstrates ability to identify/respond appropriately to potential behavioral outbursts.

4.Uses facility equipment safely.

5.Recognizes, removes, and/or reports potential hazards.

6.Follows established safety rules/accident prevention.

D.Role Responsibilities-Infection Control:

1.Demonstrates proper handwashing techniques.

2.Maintains proper food handling techniques and ensures glove usage, when necessary.

3.Disposes of waste properly.

4.

Understands and maintains activity/kitchen sanitation procedures, when necessary.

E.

Role Responsibilities-Resident Dignity:

1.Addresses residents in a respectful manner.

2.Discusses confidential resident information in appropriate areas only.

F.Other duties as assigned by the CEO/Administrator.

QUALIFICATIONS

1. Minimum requirements include experience leading activities in a healthcare setting.

2. Leadership experience in directing and evaluating staff.

3. Current state license or certification where required by state regulations.

4.Is:•Eligible for certification as a therapeutic recreation specialist or as an activities professional by a recognized accrediting body on or after October 1, 1990; or

  • Has 2 years of experience in a social or recreational program within the last 5 years, one of which was full-time in a therapeutic activities program; or
  • Is a qualified occupational therapist or occupational therapy assistant; or
  • Has completed a training course approved by the State within 90 days of hire (during probationary period) if not already certified.
