Librarian II - Reference Services
Serves as head of Reference Services under the supervision of the Library Director. This position oversees the daily operations of reference and information services, ensuring high-quality customer service and access to resources for all patrons. This position provides leadership, training, and support to reference staff while promoting library services, collections, and programs that meet community needs.
- Supervises, schedules, and evaluates reference staff.
- Provides training and ongoing professional development opportunities for staff.
- Assists with hiring and onboarding.
- Coordinates reference services across all libraries.
- Participates in selection, evaluation, and maintenance of reference and circulating collections.
- Assists with management of electronic resources and databases.
- Prepares statistical reports related to reference services.
- Plans and supports library programs, workshops, and presentations.
- Provides reference and research assistance in person, by phone, and online.
- Guides patrons in the use of print and digital information resources.
- Addresses and resolves patron concerns and service issues.
- Engages with community organizations and stakeholders to expand outreach.
- Oversees the operation of the Law Library, including maintaining legal reference materials and assisting patrons with legal research resources.
Education and Experience:
Master’s Degree from an A.L.A. accredited library school program plus two years of public library reference experience, or an equivalent combination of formal education and working experience.
Prior supervisory experience preferred.
Licenses, Certifications, or Registrations:

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Strong knowledge of reference resources, research methods, and library technologies.
Ability to lead, motivate, and evaluate staff.
Knowledge of current trends and best practices in public libraries and customer service.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Knowledge of community resources, needs, and interests.
Ability to establish effective working relationships with other library professionals, public groups, and library patrons.
