Student Success Coach - Evans Junior High/Ottumwa High School

Under the supervision of the Program Director, Educational Talent Search & Upward Bound, the Success Coach will provide vocational, and academic services to eligible participants. The Success Coach will work as a member of the Talent Search project team to ensure that the project goals and objectives as established in the funded federal proposal are accomplished and specified Federal and local institutional criteria are met. This position is housed at Evan Junior High and Ottumwa High School.

Minimum Job Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree required.
• Minimum of one year advising or teaching experience at a middle school, high school, or post-secondary institution.
• Professional experience with at-risk students preferred.
• Experience with and/or knowledge in one or more of the areas of high school course planning, financial aid, admissions, career development, counseling, testing, evaluation, and other relevant processes needed to assist with post-secondary education.
• Must demonstrate organizational, promotional, oral and written communication skills, leadership skills, instructional skills and expertise in the area of vocational and academic assessment, advisement, and counseling.
• Experience or knowledge on recruitment to assist us in meeting our objective of 500 participants.
• Must be able to perform job responsibilities with minimal direct supervision and remain self-motivated to meet program objectives.
• Must demonstrate sensitivity to the needs of target population and understand how to support them and provide intervention services for these students.
• Preference will be given to a person who has education and/or economic background similar to the target population.

Work Performed

• Provide individualized advising, career exploration, and postsecondary planning services that help participants identify pathways aligned with their interests, strengths, workforce needs, industry-recognized credentials, workforce training programs, pre-apprenticeships, and Registered Apprenticeships.
• Assist participants in identifying, documenting, and communicating academic, career, and workplace skills through career assessments, digital résumés or portfolios, and other career readiness activities that support successful transitions to postsecondary education, training, and employment.
• Plan, implement, and facilitate career development, soft skills, financial aid, college entrance, and other workshops that support the project objectives and meet the needs of participants as needed.
• Provide field trip opportunities to participants to colleges, educational enrichment, events, and potential career sites.
• Plan, implement, and facilitate workshops for parents on the college-going process.
• Collaborate with high school staff on drop-out prevention efforts.
• Communicate regularly with school counseling staff and Director, Talent Search & Upward Bound on progress with participants and any challenges encountered.
• Develop contacts with target area organizations to develop a referral system.
• Maintain positive working relationships with target community school districts and follow communication plan by meeting with administrators, teachers, and counselors.
• Document all services provided to ETS participants in the Blumen database.
• Monitor and enter Annual Performance Report (APR) data into Blumen, including participants’ completion of rigorous curriculum, persistence, FAFSA completion, graduation, and enrollment in post-secondary education.
• Complete quarterly Time and Effort Forms.
• Occasional overnight travel may be required for student field trips and/or professional development.
• Maintain regular and consistent attendance at work.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Para I – Exempt – Grant Funded, at-will employment on a letter of employment
* This position is dependent on special funding and subject to change based on availability of funds.

Employment Length:
3.5 term, consistent with the local school district calendar

Schedule:
7.5 hours Monday-Thursday, 7:45 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.; 6 hours Friday, 7:45 a.m. to 1:45 p.m.
