Outreach Advisor, Educational Opportunity Center (Full Time- Burlington)

Description

Under the supervision of the Project Director, Educational Opportunity Center, the Advisor will provide direct personal, vocational, and academic services to eligible participants in the project’s 14-county service area in southeast Iowa. The Advisor will help participants pursue high school equivalency completion, financial aid, postsecondary education, workforce training, Registered Apprenticeships, industry-recognized credentials and other career pathways. The Advisor will work as a member of the Educational Opportunity Center project team to ensure that the project goals and objectives as established in the funded federal proposal are accomplished and specified Federal and local institutional criteria are met. Travel will be required.

Minimum Job Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree required in education, psychology, sociology, human services or a closely related field. Master’s degree preferred.
• One year advising experience at a secondary, postsecondary institution or social service organization preferred.
• Travel will be required, must have valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
• Professional experience working with low-income, potential first-generation, HiSET, adult learner, or other underserved populations students preferred.
• Experience with and/or knowledge of financial aid, admissions, career development, counseling, workforce training, assessment, and other relevant processes needed to assist with postsecondary education and workforce training enrollment preferred.

• Preference will be given to a person who has education and/or economic background similar to the target population.
• Must demonstrate organizational, promotional, oral and written community skills, leadership skills, instructional skills and expertise in area of vocational and academic assessment, advisement and counseling.
• Must have knowledge and/or skill with project population and their specific needs.
• Must be able to perform job responsibilities with minimal direct supervision.
• Must demonstrate sensitivity to the needs of target population and the EOC program.
• Must communicate effectively with participants, educational partners, workforce agencies, community organizations, and other professional personnel.

Work Performed

• Assist with recruitment of 1,000 participants.
• Provide direct personal, vocational, and academic services to eligible participants.
• Provide individualized assistance to participants including help with HiSET completion, completing financial aid, scholarship, workforce training, and apprenticeship applications, preparing for college entrance examinations, academic planning, and course selection.
• Plan, implement, and facilitate career development, financial aid, postsecondary planning, and other workshops that support the project objectives and meet the needs of participants.
• Provide on-site assistance in the target area to outreach staff.
• Conduct outreach and provide services to eligible adults, youth, HiSET students, college stop-outs, displaced workers and individuals referred by educational, workforce and community partners.
• Develop contacts with target area organizations to develop a referral system.
• Assist high school dropout participants by enabling them to re-enroll in high school, or enroll in a high school completion program.
• Assist participants who are college stop outs by enabling them to re-enroll in postsecondary education programs.
• Assist participants with personal, career, and academic counseling so they can make informed decisions regarding postsecondary education, workforce training, Registered Apprenticeships, industry-recognized credentials, and other career pathways.
• Make referrals as appropriate to all college and/or university offices and community organizations that can assist with enrollment or re-enrollment of participants.
• Maintain regular and consistent attendance at work.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
