Intervention Specialist (Moderate to Intensive) - Primary School
Job Description
The Intervention Specialist (Moderate to Intensive, Grades K–4) is a full-time, certified teaching position reporting to the Building Principal. This educator provides individualized instruction and support for primary students with moderate to intensive disabilities, addressing academic, functional, social, and behavioral goals outlined in each student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP). The specialist collaborates with staff, families, and support agencies to ensure compliance with federal and state regulations while creating a nurturing, developmentally appropriate environment that promotes early learning, independence, and foundational life skills.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement IEPs for students with significant developmental and learning needs
- Deliver individualized instruction focused on early literacy, numeracy, communication, and life skills
- Use developmentally appropriate practices and visual, tactile, or sensory supports
- Adapt curriculum and design engaging, hands-on activities that support student growth
- Collaborate with general education teachers, paraprofessionals, and related service providers
- Provide guidance and support for inclusion in general education settings when appropriate
- Collect and monitor data to evaluate student progress and adjust instruction
- Participate in IEP meetings, intervention teams, and multidisciplinary planning
- Maintain accurate, confidential records and ensure compliance with IDEA and state regulations
- Communicate regularly with parents/guardians and foster home-school partnerships
- Support positive behavior interventions and manage individual behavior plans
- Supervise and train support staff in classroom routines and instructional strategies
- Create a safe, predictable, and supportive learning environment tailored to individual needs
- Assist with required duties such as arrival/dismissal, lunchroom, and recess supervision
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Education or equivalent from an accredited four-year college or university
- Valid State of Ohio teaching license with Moderate to Intensive Intervention Specialist certification
- Knowledge of early childhood development, differentiated instruction, and sensory-based learning
- Experience with augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) tools
- Strong communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills
- Familiarity with positive behavior supports and early intervention practices
- Ability to create engaging, child-centered lessons and manage diverse learner needs
