Position Summary

The Direct Support Professional (uncertified) is an entry-level position that provides person-centered support to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Working under the guidance of supervisors and experienced staff, the DSP (uncertified) promotes health, safety, independence, community inclusion, and quality of life, while learning to deliver services in accordance with DBHDD, CARF and InCommunity standards.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities

Support Individual Engagement and Inclusion

  • Provide person-centered services that promote choice, dignity, and independence.
  • Assist individuals with activities of daily living (e.g., bathing, toileting, eating, dressing), administration of medication (as authorized), transportation, and community participation.
  • Encourage participation in home and community activities that support each individual's goals, interests, and preferences.
  • Assist individuals with transportation to appointments, recreational activities, employment, and community events.
  • Promote skill development that increases independence and supports home and community living.
  • Advocate for individual rights while encouraging meaningful relationships with family, friends, and members of the community.

Promote Health and Well-Being

  • Support implementation of Individual Service Plans (ISP), behavior support plans, and risk mitigation strategies.
  • Observe individuals for changes in health, behavior, or emotional well-being and report concerns promptly.
  • Assist with medication administration as authorized and certified by InCommunity policy.
  • Follow medical protocols and nursing instructions as assigned.
  • Support healthy living by encouraging proper nutrition, exercise, hygiene and wellness practices.

Ensure Safety, Cleanliness and Meal Preparation

  • Maintain a safe clean, and therapeutic home environment.
  • Follow all safety procedures, emergency protocols, and organizational policies.
  • Respond appropriately to emergencies and participate in crisis response and de-escalation efforts as trained.
  • Report incidents, injuries, hazards, and safety concerns immediately.

Meals and Food Preparation

  • Prepare nutritious meals that reflect individuals' preferences, nutritional needs, and dietary restrictions.
  • Assist individuals with meal preparation, dining, grocery shopping, and kitchen cleanup.
  • Follow food safety and sanitation procedures.

Home Maintenance

  • Perform light housekeeping responsibilities, including laundry, dishwashing, vacuuming, mopping, bathroom cleaning, and maintaining organized living areas.
  • Ensure the home remains safe, welcoming, and compliant with agency standards.

 

Communication, Teamwork and Professional Conduct

  • Complete Therap documentation, daily shift notes, incident reports, and other required documentation accurately and within required timeframes.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, coworkers, healthcare professionals, and family members while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Participate in team meetings, required training, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Demonstrate accountability, professionalism, positive interpersonal skills, and effective time management.
  • Seek guidance when questions arise and accept coaching to improve job performance.

Attendance and Scheduling

  • Maintain regular attendance and punctuality.
  • Report to scheduled shifts prepared to perform assigned responsibilities.
  • Remain on duty until properly relieved by another staff member.
  • Follow organizational scheduling and attendance policies.

Compliance

  • Complete all required orientation, annual training, certifications, and competency assessments. Comply with DBHDD, CARF, Medicaid, and InCommunity policies and procedures.
  • Maintain required certifications, including CPR/First Aid and Medication Administration (or obtain certification within required timeframes).
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:

Education, Certifications & Experience Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Previous experience supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities is preferred but not required.
  • Certifications: CPR/First Aid and Medication Administration certification (or ability to obtain within established timeframes).

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This position has no formal supervisory responsibilities.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

  • Residential and community settings with moderate noise.
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, lifting up to 50 pounds, and assisting with transfers of adults as needed.
  • Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.

Travel Required:

This position does not require travel for work purposes.
