Supervises all Registered Nurses and LPN’s in various programs and oversees all aspects of their performance. Coordinates and monitors nursing services for the individuals with disabilities in those programs including daily interactions and treatments and the development of schedules that maximize the exposure of the RNs to the individuals serves. Oversees and maintains the on-call schedule to ensure that nursing coverage is available 24 hours per day. Acts as the primary liaison between In Flight, Inc. and the health providers who provide services to the people we support (MDs, hospitals, clinics, Urgent Care locations, etc.). Monitors and ensures the attendance and completion of mandated training sessions for all RNs/LPNs and seeks to implement best practice procedures for non-mandated but valuable training sessions. Works
with the Human Resources Department and Associate Director of Human Resources to ensure that all staff are trained as per OPWDD regulations and OSHA Standards as it pertains to this department. Represents the Nursing Dept. at Program Directors meetings and keeps the Executive Director updated to issues and concerns that impact medical service delivery to the individuals with disabilities served by In Flight, Inc.


As the Director of Nursing Services, you are responsible and accountable to carry out your assigned duties and for the supervision, provision and quality of nursing care in the facility. Under the direction of the Medical Director, you are charged
with carrying out the resident care policies and procedures to insure residents have positive outcomes.


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • RN or BS required, MA preferred in Nursing and successful completion of the State Board Examination for licensing.
  • 2 years supervisory/management experience
  • Experience working with Developmentally Disabled Adults preferred but not required.
  • Ability to sit, stand, kneel, and walk intermittently and for long periods of time.
  • Possession of a clean NYS driver's license required
  • Acceptable Background per In Flight & NYS Justice Center guidelines.
  • Ability to read, write and comprehend English; ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to work hours as schedule based on the requirements of the position/assignment. On call as necessary.

PRIMARY FUNCTIONS:

1. Coordinates the scheduling and provision of medical services including on-site nursing, consulting services and off-site clinical visits and pharmaceutical services.

2. Works closely with psychiatrist to ensure follow-up for recommendations and physician's orders, provides monthly
lists to clinical services for quarterly and annual psychiatric.

3. Oversees, plans, and organizes assignments to nursing staff for direct support staff.

4. Provides in-services to staff or delegates to other nursing staff in-services relating to seizures, medications, first-aid and other health related needs of our population.

5. Assists in budget preparation for the Medical Services Department. Administers budget as approved by the Executive Director and monitors expenses to decrease expenditures and improve efficiency. Is responsible for the management of the department budget.

6. Participation in administrative meetings, committees and other meetings pertinent to the health care and safety of our consumers.

7. Will be responsible for supervision and performance evaluations for the medical staff.

8. Responsible for procedures to be written in keeping with regulatory agencies. Collaborates with other departments as applicable.

9. Meets with government and agency officials for inspections of nursing stations, drug control, medical records, etc. 7

Other Duties & Essential Elements (not inclusive)

  • Performs a variety of management and leadership functions, including participating in employment, orientation and training of new employees; provides training and retraining.
  • Conducts regular meetings with nursing staff to discuss issues, disseminate information and gain feedback.
  • Reviews medically related policies that govern nursing actions and health related procedures as per OPWDD and professional nursing guidelines.
  • Acts as liaison with programmatic staff to ensure residential and nursing staff are working together in a cohesive fashion to foster the best possible environment for individuals served.
  • May assume duties of a house RN and on-call when needed.
  • Position will require a degree of flexibility in schedule, including evenings, nights, weekends in order to cover or assist with emergencies as they arise.
  • Frequent travel between work sites.

All staff must pass all NYS Justice Center Background Check Requirements and Physical. In addition, the employee has a duty to report any suspected violations of the law (including any motor vehicle infractions) to the Human Resources Director.
