Role Overview
The Sr. Manager, Product Owner will lead digital product efforts for Schwab’s Retirement Plan Services Digital Team, with a specialized focus on modernizing back-office systems that support plan sponsors, participants, and internal operations. This role emphasizes technical leadership, operational efficiency, and end-to-end process improvement across distributed systems, leveraging Agile practices and strong collaboration with both onshore and offshore teams.

Key Responsibilities
  • Technical Product Leadership:
    • Own backend-focused product capabilities including batch processing, ACH workflows, distributed integrations, and end-to-end automation across retirement plan systems.
    • Drive root cause analysis and production support strategy, especially for high-volume, business-critical systems.
    • Lead the development of system enhancements that reduce risk, improve scalability, and support operational excellence.
  • Agile Team Management:
    • Act as Product Owner for 1–2 Agile teams, consisting of 8–9 team members, with a global delivery model (onshore/offshore).
    • Work closely with Scrum Masters and offshore tech leads (who act as POs’ delegates) to ensure continuous progress during overlapping hours.
    • Define and prioritize user stories using Behavior Driven Development (BDD) techniques, manage the backlog, and lead sprint planning and reviews.
    • Support Program Increment (PI) planning cycles and coordinate monthly release deployments, typically scheduled during night/early morning hours.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration:
    • Partner with internal operational teams (non-client facing) to understand workflow pain points and gather business requirements.
    • Serve as an enabler for client-facing teams, ensuring backend capabilities align with user experience goals and compliance needs.
    • Translate operational needs and system dependencies into actionable technical requirements and phased releases.
  • Roadmap & Delivery:
    • Develop strategic roadmaps and OKRs aligned to business objectives and platform modernization goals.
    • Sequence initiatives across impacted teams, manage cross-team dependencies, and lead coordination and testing efforts for successful releases.
    • Maintain service-level expectations, gather feedback, and continuously evolve product capabilities based on system performance and stakeholder input.

Required Skills & Experience
  • Strong technical product ownership experience, particularly in financial services or ACH payment systems.
  • Deep understanding of retirement plan administration, batch processing, and distributed architecture.
  • Demonstrated success in leading global Agile teams and working with offshore/onshore models.
  • Ability to perform root cause analysis and troubleshoot production issues in mission-critical environments.
  • Experienced in Agile ceremonies, backlog management, user story writing, and cross-functional alignment.
  • General knowledge in architecture with .net, angular and sql server.  Experience with batch processing and file integrations

Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience in a technical back-office or financial domain.
  • Certified Scrum Product Owner (CSPO) or equivalent.
  • Familiarity with Scaled Agile (SAFe) environments and tools like Jira, Rally, and Adobe Analytics.
  • Experience leading PI planning and managing production release windows during non-standard hours.
