Progress Rail, a Caterpillar company, in partnership with Impact Workforce Solutions, is adding an experienced Industrial Fabrication Welder to our manufacturing team in Muncie, Indiana.

A day in the life

You clock in for your selected shift and review the day’s weldments. With drawings and BOMs in hand, you set up components, cut materials to spec, prep edges with grinders, and verify dimensions with calipers, scales, and a trusty tape. Your GMAW (MIG) and SMAW (Stick) skills take center stage as you run single- and multi-pass welds in all positions, all while meeting ISO, AAR, and Progress Rail QSP 4.9 requirements. Between assemblies, you move parts safely with overhead cranes, keep equipment in top shape with basic preventative maintenance, and lend a hand mentoring a teammate who’s working toward certification.

Schedule and pay

• Shifts: 1st (Mon–Fri, 6:00am–2:30pm), 2nd (Mon–Fri, 2:30pm–11:00pm), 3rd (Sun–Thurs, 9:30pm–6:00am)
• Typical workload: 40–56 hours/week; 5–6 days/week (OT may be required)
• Pay: $22 per hour, based on experience and shift
• Employment: Full-time, weekly pay

What you’ll do

• Earn and maintain internal welding certification to meet ISO, AAR, and other regulatory standards
• Fabricate to specification: fit-up, tack, and weld per prints and assembly instructions
• Cut materials to precise measurements using powered saws
• Prep parts with angle grinders and hand tools prior to welding
• Interpret welding blueprints, drawings, and bills of material
• Maintain compliance with Progress Rail QSP 4.9 and applicable local/international standards
• Accurately measure and record inspection data using tape measures, scales, and calipers
• Operate pneumatic/electric tools and overhead cranes to move components safely

Advanced scope

• Perform pipe welding and all-position GMAW/SMAW
• Obtain certifications such as AWS D1.1
• Execute single- and multi-pass welds across a variety of joint configurations
• Conduct basic and preventative maintenance on weld equipment
• Coach and train less experienced welders
• Forklift certification preferred
• Grow into advanced processes, including training on Robot Welders

Qualifications

• Relevant technical certifications may substitute for experience
• Preferred process certifications: GMAW, FCAW, SMAW

Preferred strengths

• Certified welder with broad process knowledge (approx. 90% MIG, 10% Stick; TIG and Flux Core exposure)
• Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting ability

Physical and safety requirements

• Lift up to 50 lbs.; work in tight or confined spaces
• Climb, reach, kneel, and perform other physically active tasks
• Maintain visual and auditory acuity to operate tools safely with PPE
• Work in varying conditions, including temperature extremes and inclement weather

Safety commitment

• This is a safety-sensitive role requiring strict adherence to PPE, safety policies, and regulations in areas with heavy equipment and live tracks.
