What are the responsibilities and job description for the Network Administrator I position at ImOn Communications, LLC?

Description

ImOn Communications has been the LOCAL choice for high-speed Internet, cable TV, and phone in Eastern Iowa since 2007. Since then, we have expanded our network to provide fiber Internet services to more than a dozen communities in Iowa and beyond! As we grow our network, we are looking for a Network Administrator I to join our team.

At ImOn, you will be part of a workplace that values relationships with colleagues, customers, and our community. Our culture is focused on fostering a fun and rewarding work environment where you’ll help our team create connections, one person at a time.

The Network Administrator I is an entry-level, hands-on role supporting the day-to-day operations of a dynamic ISP network. You’ll perform basic troubleshooting, respond to escalations from the NOC, and help maintain reliable delivery of advanced data, voice, and video services for business customers. This role is a launchpad for developing real-world networking skills — you'll get to apply your technical knowledge daily, solve meaningful problems, and see the direct impact of your work. You'll also collaborate with senior engineers, provide feedback to improve operational procedures, and continuously learn in a fast-paced, service-driven environment.

Essential duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Provisioning Business Services and Technical Troubleshooting:

  • Configure advanced services for Internet, L2VPN, SIP trunks, PRI, and Video services.
  • Basic configuration and monitoring of switches, routers, and network monitoring equipment.
  • Update monitoring and management systems when devices are turned up or decommissioned.
  • Respond to network alarms, NOC escalations, and advanced customer support requests.

Support Core Network Infrastructure:

  • Assist Engineering teams in deploying, testing, and validating new network equipment and upgrades related to core network, voice, or video projects.
  • Participate in routine network upgrades or migrations during after-hours maintenance windows.
  • Assist with inventory management of network equipment.
  • Install core network equipment, servers, video receivers, and cabling such as Cat6, fiber, coax.
  • Provide remote hands for projects or advanced core network troubleshooting such as packet captures.
  • Provide after-hours support as required to ensure uninterrupted service.

Collaboration and Training:

  • Document network changes, configurations, and technical support procedures.
  • Participate in team meetings, cross-training sessions, and internal knowledge sharing.
  • Work closely with the NOC, Network Admins, and Engineers to gain hands-on experience.

Requirements

We are looking for people with (minimum requirements):

  • High School Diploma or combination of education and experience.
  • At least 6 months experience in a NOC, helpdesk, or IT support role.
  • CompTIA Network or Cisco CCST/CCNA (in progress or completed).
  • Basic understanding of networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, NAT, routing/switching concepts).
  • Familiarity with Layer 1–3 troubleshooting and common networking tools (ping, traceroute, Wireshark).
  • Experience with Windows and/or Linux command-line environments.
  • Comfortable working in a 24/7 operations environment, including occasional nights/weekends for maintenance or escalations.
  • Exposure to enterprise-grade or service provider network equipment (Cisco, Juniper, MikroTik, etc.).
  • Understanding of customer-premise equipment (CPE) and basic provisioning.
  • Familiarity with network monitoring systems (e.g., Zabbix, LibreNMS, SolarWinds).
  • Strong curiosity and willingness to learn from real-world challenges.
  • Ability to follow procedures and document work thoroughly.
  • Team player with a proactive attitude and drive to grow into more advanced roles.

It would be nice if you had (preferred qualifications):

  • Associate Degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or Telecommunications, or equivalent.
  • Basic knowledge of voice (VoIP), video, or broadband delivery technologies.
  • Experience troubleshooting PON technologies.

At ImOn, we'll hook you up. We offer our employees a full benefit package to include:

  • A 401k plan with up to a 4% company match.
  • Insurance benefits that include multiple health insurance plans to choose from, Dental insurance, free Vision insurance and Life/Disability insurance.
  • A robust wellness program that offers annual health screenings as well as fitness incentives.
  • Work/Life balance that includes several different types of paid time off such as paid holidays, vacation time, personal time, volunteer time off as well as parental leave and bereavement leave.
