JOB TITLE: Equipment Operator

REPORTS TO: Blast Foreman and Superintendents

PAY RANGE: $26 - $32 hourly (DOE)

Summary of position: Responsible for set up, maintenance, and operation of marine blasting equipment. Monitor valves and gauges and adjust speed and feed of product. Monitor and maintain grit supply. Diagnose and repair problems with blasting equipment. Monitor and maintain up to three air compressors at a time. Monitor blasting operations and observe and maintain a safe work environment. Handle all blasting equipment and materials used in accordance with local regulations.

Essential Job Requirements: Set up, maintain, and operate blast pot and hopper in a safe and efficient manner; make minor or major adjustments to speed and feed; monitor valves; use gauges to determine supply and demand of product; safely and efficiently operate forklift, dust collector, and pressure washer; build or repair blast whip; keep up and order grit so as to ensure supply is sufficient for job; adjust and monitor maintenance and repair of air compressors; correspond with company supervisors, employees, and shipyard personnel in a cooperative manner. Participate during mobilization of equipment in set up and breakdown of other equipment used to support blasting operations such as air conditioning, dust collection, and other environmental controls equipment. May be required to perform additional duties as deemed necessary by the supervisor for the completion of the job in a safe and timely manner

Supervisory Responsibilities: May be required to direct, assist, and train less experienced employees.

Working Conditions: Repetitive, physical work. Regularly exposed to dusty conditions, extreme temperatures, high noise level, chemicals, fumes, airborne particles, ambient weather conditions, hazardous machinery, precarious places, proximity to other employees. Often works on scaffolds and ladders for periods of time. To avoid injury, safety clothing required along with safety devices to protect eyes, head, or hearing. Shift work and overtime involved most of the time. Travel may be required.

Aptitude Requirements: Must be able to do simple to complex math. Must be able to carry out written or verbal instructions. Must be able to problem solve, organize, and prioritize work.

Required Education: High School or GED is preferred but not required.

Required Experience: Two years’ experience operating blasting equipment

Required Skills: Must possess mechanical aptitude and manual dexterity; experience with machinery required; math skills helpful; good communication skills necessary.

Physical Requirements: Stamina required; frequently required to stand, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, and crawl. Required to reach with hands and arms, use hands to feel, grip or handle; regularly required to lift and/or move heavy objects. Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. Required to use vision for up close, distant, and peripheral inspections. Must be able to see in dim, dusty conditions. Must be able to wear dust mask and/or respirator. Physical agility required.

Equipment Used: Blast pot, hopper, forklift, dust collector, industrial vacuum units, pressure washer, air compressors, hoses, ductwork, pneumatic tools, electric tools, hand tools, vacuum bottles, compressed air, and other tools used in the maritime blasting and coating industry. Items listed are a representative sample but not an all-inclusive list. Blast equipment can be stationary, or trailer mounted. May include the operation of abrasive recycling systems.
