Position Overview
As a State Police Evidence Technician II for the Division of Forensic Services; Performs laboratory's tests as assigned; Assists with the analysis and documentation of samples analyzed in the laboratory; Performs data entry into the case tracking system; Prepares reagents; Calibrates DNA instrumentation; Records results of activities according to established Command policy and procedures; Testifies in criminal trials; Performs evidence processing procedures and casework tasks in support of Forensic Scientist analysis; Prepares and reviews chain of custody administrative records; Establishes appropriate case numbers; Receives the evidence, stores the evidence in laboratory vaults, distributes evidence to forensic scientists at appropriate times for analysis, and reobtains evidence from forensic scientists upon conclusion of analysis. • Stores the evidence and finally returns the submitting agency; Performs selected calibration procedures on various analytical instruments; Maintains charts and records in an inspection-ready status; As directed by a forensic scientist, prepares reagents used in the analysis of physical evidence; Receives, labels, and stores laboratory chemicals and supplies; Ensures a smooth transfer of physical evidence and information to and from the forensic science laboratory; Responds to inquiries from user agencies concerning the status of cases and anticipated completion dates of analytical examinations; Maintains case files as appropriate for the establishment of chain of custody information; Preserves the integrity of examinations performed; Prepares physical evidence for transmitting to forensic science laboratories; Ensures proper transportation results; Assists in instructing law enforcement agencies in the proper procedures for submission of physical evidence.

Essential Functions
- Performs preliminary handling of blood, physiological and other biological material in DNA cases as directed by forensic scientists.
- Performs assigned duties involving the receiving of Forensic Biology/DNA evidence from law enforcement agencies.
- Assists other laboratory staff in cleaning of instruments and related case processing equipment.
- Develops good rapport with user agencies.
- Prepares evidence for presentation in court proceedings.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to the completion of two (2) years of college, preferably in one of the physical/biological sciences, supplemented with one (1) year of experience in related evidence and/or sample tracking processes OR Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to the completion of three (3) years of college, preferably in one (1) of the physical/biological sciences.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prefers at least one (1) year of experience screening and/or identifying physical evidence and other materials, including but not limited to: firearms, biological fluids, sexual assault kit, controlled substances, latent prints, etc.
- Prefers at least one (1) year of experience analyzing and correlating data contained in evidentiary documents including but not limited to: evidence submission report, crime scene report, police report, medical report, etc.
- Prefers at least one (1) year of experience analyzing and correlating data to present it convincingly in reports, both verbally and in writing, including: Laboratory Cancel reports, instrument performance check records, notes from casework tasks, chain of custody administrative records, etc.
- Prefers at least one (1) year of elementary knowledge of laboratory techniques used for scientific examination of physical evidence.
- Prefers at least three (3) years of experience using computer software programs and various types of hardware.
- Prefers at least one (1) year of elementary knowledge of physical evidence processes such as can be obtained in introductory courses to law enforcement or through exposure to evidence processes by working in a forensic science laboratory in other support roles.
- Prefers at least one (1) year of elementary knowledge on court testimony and preparing court records to court exhibits such as can be obtained in intro courses to law enforcement or exposure to court testimony by working in a forensic science laboratory in other roles.
