About Iliad

Iliad is a nonprofit dedicated to advancing foundational AI alignment research. We run the Iliad Intensive, the Iliad Fellowship, and a range of conferences that bring together researchers working on the hardest problems in AI safety. We also incubate research organizations and an academic journal, and have an internal research team. We're a small and quickly growing team.

About The Role

As the Curriculum Development Lead, you will own the content of the Iliad Intensive as a whole: a course delivered to more than 40 promising students per monthly in-person iteration, covering the foundations of AI alignment research across a wide range of technical modules. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Continuously observe the AI alignment field to source new materials, topics, and research directions worth teaching, and decide what enters, changes, or leaves the curriculum
  • Ensure cohesiveness across modules: consistent notation, modules that build on each other, and no unintended gaps or redundancies
  • Develop and maintain the overall "curriculum story": a clear narrative of why we teach what we teach, in this order, toward which learning outcomes
  • Work closely with our rotating group of writers and teachers, the Teaching Lead, and the upcoming Education Platform Lead to ensure content decisions are enacted in materials and classrooms
  • Engage with participant feedback and teaching observations to identify where the curriculum falls short
  • Write and teach materials yourself

As Iliad is quickly growing, your role may adapt to changing needs of our program and Iliad as a whole.

What We’re Looking For

At a minimum, we are looking for someone with:

  • Strong mathematical maturity; for example, a university degree in a theoretical subject like mathematics, physics, or theoretical computer science. A PhD is a plus but not required.
  • Broad knowledge of the AI alignment field, at or beyond the level of the Iliad Intensive across most of its modules
  • Excellent taste in technical content: an ability to judge which ideas are foundational and worth teaching
  • Deep care for the effective learning of our participants
  • Ability to effectively coordinate with writers, teachers, and other staff to reach our goals

Our Ideal Candidate Also Comes With

  • Experience designing courses, curricula, or other substantial educational programs
  • Research experience in AI alignment or an adjacent technical field
  • Demonstrated writing and teaching ability

About

AI is a fast-moving field that changes the nature of our work constantly, and we ultimately care about impact rather than any particular project or approach. As such, we also value:

  • A broadly general skillset that can be applied to many tasks
  • Comfort working in a fast-moving organization where priorities and roles will change
  • Curiosity and ability to use AI to augment, improve, and automate various aspects of your own work

We encourage you to apply even if you do not hit every criterion!

Benefits

Our benefits include:

  • Time Off: 25 days paid vacation annually
  • Flexible Working Hours
  • Team Retreats: We have occasional in-person team retreats

Salary : $100,000 - $130,000
