The RN Education & Training/Day Hab Nurse is responsible for the coordination of the AMAP process and providing education and training in medically related subjects for employees. The RN will ensure that OSHA and OPWDD regulations are followed in matters involving employee health at all IGHL sites. The RN is accountable for ensuring that the participants are receiving the highest quality of medical care necessary.

Duties and Responsibilities

Connotes Essential Functions

Education & Training:

1 Responsible for the complete implementation and follow through of AMAP course and recertification following OPWDD protocol. Conducts AMAP classes and substitutes as needed. Responsible for the timely completion of all AMAP certification and annual recertification deadlines. Assists in on-site supervision of AMAP for medication administration.

2 Responsible for monitoring annual G tube certification as required by site assignment.

3 Responsible for monitoring annual OPWDD recognized Diabetes certification for nurses; disseminates OPWDD course offerings, manages enrollment as needed.

4 Assists HR Director of Education & Training with ongoing training and development as needed.

5 Consults ADON on the follow up of exposure incidents and providing confidential counseling to employees as per OSHA protocol. Maintains confidential tracking records of all exposure incidents.

6 Responsible for the administration of state mandated PPD to new hires and existing employees as required by OPWDD. Notifies employees and supervisors of overdue and/or missing PPD’s. Follows up with employees who have a contraindicated PPD. Updates employee records in electronic system in a timely manner.

7 Maintains contact with Healthcare Facilities Occupational Medicine and Employee Services- Submitting service requests for employees who need Chest X Rays, QuantiFERON bloodwork and following up with test results.

8 Responsible for the complete implementation and follow through of annual state mandated OSHA training, conducts classes, new hire orientation class and substitutes as needed.

9 Responsible for the coordination, follow through and tracking of annual flu vaccines.

10 Assists with Colostomy/Ileostomy/diabetes/insulin/oxygen training when requested by site ADON; attend diabetes seminars offered by OPWDD.

11- Conducts or coordinates training for projected new sites.

12- Prepares and sends PPD information and all background checks for state audits.

13- Places and reads PPDs and presents at New Employee Orientation on the following topics:

OSHA/Exposure Control

Seizures

Infection Control/PPE/Universal Precautions/Handwashing

Choking/Aspiration Protocol/Textured Diets

Poisoning

First Aid/Detecting Signs and Symptoms of Illness

Diabetes

Hepatitis B and Vaccine/Hepatitis C/HIV

Blood Borne Diseases

14- Provides coverage for the Director of Education & Training as necessary.

15- Attends necessary conferences and seminars to keep abreast of changes for OSHA, AMAP, Etc.

16- Maintains CPR instructor status, and teaches classes held at the training center and on site when needed.

17- Works closely with Quality Assurance team for OPWDD updates, recommendations, and regulatory compliance.

18- Participates in Internal Review Committee (IRC) or Human Rights Committee (HRC) when needed.

Day Habilitation:

1 Dispenses medication and delivers hands-on medical treatment as needed.

2 Reviews all medication and treatment charts on a regular basis to ensure that all medications and appropriate treatments are being given and documented by AMAP (Approved Medication Administration Personnel). Supervises AMAP’s in medication administration. Recertifies AMAP’s annually.

3 Ensures that an adequate supply of medication for all consumers is maintained in the day program when appropriate.

4 Ensures that current doctor’s orders are maintained in the participants chart for all medications, medical treatments and special diets.

5 Ensures that all medications and medical supplies are available and stored according to regulations and IGHL policy; documentations of inspections will be maintained weekly.

6 Evaluates the participant’s physical condition for the need of medical care when sick. Carries out all procedures necessary.

7 In a medical emergency obtains the proper emergency help (i.e. police, ambulance, etc.) or renders first aid and follows up with doctor’s visit if warranted.

8 Responsible for all day programs in the RN capacity and tasks will vary as needed during the day.

9- Ensures that the first aid kit is adequately supplied at all times within the Day Habilitation program.

10- Reviews Plan of Nursing Services (PONS) annually and as needed for each participant that is specific to the participant’s needs; reviews PONS at least quarterly, and makes changes if needed.

11- Provides general and individual specific in-service training to all day program staff.

12- Ensures that the medical and nursing records for each participant are maintained according to IGHL policy.

13- Adheres to all IGHL policies and procedures.

14- Attends Annual Life Plans as needed if a medical issue needs to be discussed with the team and/or family.

15- Collaborates with family and serves as a liaison when paperwork is needed at the day hab.

16- All other duties as assigned

Education, Work Experience, and Competencies

NYS RN License

Two years of experience in the DD field and/or two years hospital experience

Complete and maintain SCIP, BLS, AMAP and Driver’s certifications, as per IGHL policy

Comfortable with Computer Technology and proficient in MS Office

Strong written and oral communication skills

Good interpersonal skills and organizational skills with the ability to multi-task

Must be able to lift 50 lbs.

Valid NYS Driver’s License
