Job Summary:

 

The Native American Student Services Coordinator provides support and pastoral care to Idyllwild Arts Academy students with specific attention and sensitivities to Native American/Alaskan Native and First Nations students. This position oversees the cultural well-being of Indigenous students, ensuring their academic success. In addition to supporting Indigenous students. This role involves standing in as a medical proxy for students alongside Heath Center staff, taking students to doctor appointments at regional Indian Health Clinics. This position will also co-manage Meaningful Access Funding, ensuring students are equipped with all supplies needed to succeed in the classroom. This position will also work closely with admissions in identifying and conducting school tours for potential Native American students interested in Idyllwild Arts. This position will also assist the Native American Arts Center in its educational programming throughout the academic year. As a key member of the Student Services team, the Native American Student Coordinator will also support broader student and community programs. The individual in this position will serve as a dorm parent in the residence life program and may live in on-campus housing. This is a two-year, grant-funded position, beginning in the fall of 2026.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

 

  • Serves as an additional advisor to the Native American Students.
  • Provides culturally appropriate care and support to ensure student academic and personal growth.
  • Serves as the lead liaison working directly with the Health Center to set up appointments for Native Students as well as transport students to scheduled doctor appointments.
  • Assists the Admissions Department in conducting campus tours to prospective families of Native American/Alaskan Native/First Nations descent.  
  • Tracks and manages requests for Meaningful Access Funding for Native American Students
  • Serves as co-sponsor of the Indigenous Peoples Club, organizing and facilitating club events/field trips, etc. Supports other student leaders, clubs, and groups as needed 
  • Assists the Native American Arts Center with any and all educational programming during the academic year. 
  • Serves as the lead liaison between the school and parents for Native American Students.
  • Works with the college counselors to support students applying for college entry. 
  • Serves as a member of the Student Support Team, working to develop multi-disciplinary support plans for students
  • As a key member of the Student Services Team, provides logistical and administrative support to the community and student experience as needed.
  • Collaborates with other school departments to support overall student well-being.
  • Supports the planning and execution of residential life and community programming to support student growth.
  • Supports the Idyllwild Arts Summer Program 
  • Serves as a dorm parent and may reside in campus housing.

 

Qualifications:

Required Education, Skills and Experience:

 

  • Strong understanding of cultural competency of Native American/Alaskan Native/First Nations Cultures.
  • Awareness of the implications of the US Federal Boarding School Policy and its lasting effects on Indigenous communities and Indigenous youth.
  • Experience working with Indigenous youth, preferably in a boarding or community setting.
  • Ability and desire to work and reside within the Idyllwild community
  • Ability to converse in clear English both written and orally, over the telephone and in person, and be able to make public presentations.
  • Work hours vary and may include days, nights, and weekends.
  • A high school diploma or the equivalent is required.

 

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability and desire to work within the Idyllwild community.
  • Obtain and maintain a valid California Driver's License, pass a criminal history background check as required by California Education Code Section 44237. 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENTS

While performing the duties of this position, an incumbent may be required to:

  • Regularly remain sedentary for long periods of time in meetings and while processing information and paperwork both manually and on a computer.
  • Reach with the hands and arms and use of hands to finger, type, and manipulate a computer keyboard and mouse.
  • Additionally, the incumbent must be able to converse in clear English, both written and orally, over the telephone and in person.
  • Be able to make public presentations.
  • Occasionally, the incumbent may be required to lift up to 25 pounds, traverse uneven terrain, climb stairs while moving about campus, bend and stoop, conduct tours, and show visitors campus facilities.
  • Provide their transportation for local and remote events.
  • Work hours vary and may include days, nights, and weekends.
