Dorm Parent
Idyllwild Arts Academy is a performing arts boarding school for 9-12th graders located in the San Jacinto Mountains. Our students live on campus in dormatories throughout the school year. Each dorm is staffed with dorm parents who oversee the students as well as other tasks as detailed below:
Each Dorm Parent reports directly to their Dorm Head. Dorm Parent responsibilities include:
- Supporting their Dorm Head in establishing and maintaining a safe, trusting, tolerant and nurturing home environment
- Being responsible for the wellbeing of the students in their dorm, and all students on campus when they are on duty
- Supervising quiet hours
- Enforcing all rules as directed by our Student/Parent Handbook, Head of School, the Dean of Students, the Director of Campus Life, and Dorm Head.
- Dorm Parents must fully account for the whereabouts of all students in their dorm during their duty shift. Dorm Parents may be asked to assist the AOC or other dorm parents in contacting a parent to determine the location of a student.
- Modeling appropriate behavior with regard to proper treatment of all school facilities and conducting regular room inspections on a schedule determined by the Dorm Head.
- Serving as a role model to students as they learn to live independently in the dorms. Dorm Parents must be on alert for signs of stress, homesickness, culture shock, health problems, drug or alcohol abuse, and any other matters affecting student health and safety. Dorm Parents must communicate these concerns immediately.
- Participating in dorm meetings and full dorm staff meetings on a regular basis.
- Chaperoning at least one student activity each semester.
- Sleeper Duty, if living in apartment attached to dorm
- Responding to any emergencies that arise at any time by contacting the Health Center, AOC, or other administrators as needed. They must coordinate with other Dorm Parents and with the Security Office to respond to fire and other security alarm issues.
- Tracking and enforcing dorm expectations for students via a positive reinforcement credit system, consistent with all other dorms. Expectations include but aren't limited to behavior, clean rooms and common areas, curfew, check-ins, and pod meetings.
- Having a basic understanding of the dorms mechanical functions and knowing the locations of all basic infrastructure (plumbing, electrical, fire suppression, etc.) and ensuring all of their dorm parents have the same understanding.
- Read dorm logs and handle any issues mentioned on a daily basis.
- Check email on a daily basis and, when needed, respond in a timely fashion, typically less than 24 hours
- Helping the Dean of Students on an as-needed basis. This includes but is not limited to:
- Assisting with the departure of students in their dorm who are leaving the academy for any reason - expulsions, withdrawals, medical leaves, etc.
- Assisting with student services investigations in their dorm, discipline, student issues or conflicts, room searches, etc.
- Assisting with disaster preparation, training, and drills for their dorms.
Position Requirements:
- Previous experience working with students at a high school level in a school environment with boarding school and dorm experience a plus.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Good people skills.
- Able to work any shift including nights preferred.
- Prefer local candidates that know the Idyllwild area. No relocation available and limited housing.
- Bachelors Degree in related subject is preferred.
- Dorm Parents are required to be Mandated Reporters and are certified upon hire if they don't currently have a valid certificate. Also a TB screening and must successfully pass a LifeScan background check.
- To drive a company vehicle, they must be age 25 or older.
- Able to start work as soon as hired and clears background check.
