Job Description
The successful candidate will perform and direct advanced journey-level and master-level construction, building trades, mechanical work, and grounds maintenance in multiple areas of responsibility related to constructing facilities and maintaining associated systems and equipment on the Idaho Falls campus of Idaho State University.
Work hours are typically between 6 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. On call and after-hours work is a regular function of this position due to the nature of the responsibilities. This position is not eligible for remote work.
This position is not eligible for new visa sponsorship at this time. Candidates who already hold valid U.S. work authorization may be considered.
Key Responsibilities
Construction & Building Trades
- Lead and perform structural construction and remodeling, including framing, drywall, siding, painting, and installation of doors/locks.
- Perform specialized masonry, steel erection, and finish carpentry.
- Execute concrete work, including forming, pouring, finishing, and repair of flatwork and foundations.
- Operate heavy construction equipment, including excavators, backhoes, loaders, and dump trucks.
Mechanical & Systems Maintenance
- Maintain and repair electrical systems, including wiring, lighting, ballasts, and switches.
- Perform plumbing repairs on pipes, fixtures, septic systems, and gas lines.
- Maintain and repair small engines, hydraulic systems, and diesel-powered equipment.
Landscaping & Grounds Management
- Execute end-to-end grounds care, including lawn maintenance, horticultural management, and campus forestry.
- Install, troubleshoot, and maintain automated irrigation systems; implement water conservation practices.
- Manage year-round site safety through consistent snow and ice removal and hazardous tree mitigation.
- Design and construct new landscape projects, including site prep and hardscape installation.
Event Logistics & Safety
- Support campus events by interpreting diagrams to set up and tear down staging, tables, chairs, and program aids.
- Ensure all event layouts maintain symmetry, proper spacing, and strict compliance with fire safety and ADA guidelines.
- Perform traffic control, site safety inspections, and manage hazardous materials as needed.
Project Support and Coordination
- Review project plans, blueprints, and specifications to ensure compliance and quality.
- Conduct on-site inspections, coordinate with contractors and regulatory agencies, and manage project modifications.
- Compute material quantities, oversee costs, and manage contractor/supplier payments.
- Maintain detailed project reports and provide input on staff performance.
All reasonable duties as assigned.
Considerable knowledge of:
- Construction and building trades work.
- Construction methods.
- Operating, transporting and maintaining equipment associated with construction and building trades and grounds maintenance.
- Placing and finishing concrete.
- Performing rough and finish carpentry.
- Performing maintenance plumbing and electrical work.
- Reading/interpreting plans, specifications and blueprints.
- Using and maintaining building trades hand and power tools.
- Providing construction and trades direction and training to others.
- Evaluating the construction and trades performance of others.
- Identifying, procuring and organizing materials and equipment necessary for construction projects.
Specialty Requirements - These positions at ISU require the following:
- Valid driver's license.
- Respond to emergency call-backs.
- Successful completion of both a physical exam, including cardiopulmonary function testing and chest x-ray, as well as a respirator fit test.
Supplemental Information
The incumbent is considered an advanced journey-level and master-level worker in all aspects of inside and outside heavy construction and building trades type work. This is primarily new construction, although maintenance of existing facilities may be included. Incumbents should have a proficient background in all aspects of construction and trades work.
This position requires you to work in all weather conditions.
This position also involves physical activities associated with construction work such as lifting and carrying items weighing approximately 100 pounds, bending and stooping, and working at heights of up to 50 feet. Some positions, depending on department needs, may require registration and training as a plumbing or electrical apprentice.
Additional Information
