Job Description

Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Nuclear Instrumentation and Calibration Technician to work on our Instrumentation and Calibration team. This position would work normally assigned 4x10 schedule at MFC with every Friday off, with the potential for alternate shifts and overtime pending future program and mission needs.

The Materials and Fuels Complex (MFC) at INL empowers the next generation of nuclear energy advances through hosting a unique combination of personnel, facilities, and infrastructure. MFC offers the ability to perform research and development of nuclear fuels and material from fuels design, development, and fabrication through to post-irradiation analysis.

Calibrate, adjust, evaluate, modify, and repair electrical, physical, and dimensional measurement standards and measuring/test equipment to assure accuracy and traceability to national standards, physical constants, ratio-type devices, or consensus standards in nuclear and radiological facilities. Set up and develop measurement systems to provide calibration of new/unique instruments and devices. Troubleshoot faulty circuits and repair as necessary to ensure compliance to requirement specifications. Write procedures for engineering approval to ensure control and consistency of measurement processes.

Responsibilities

  • Install, modify, repair, troubleshoot and calibrate nuclear reactor and/or facility equipment. Align, adjust, and calibrate equipment according to approved procedures or manufactures specifications.
  • Perform preventive/predictive maintenance on nuclear systems and components.
  • Install control and measurement instruments on existing or new research equipment and facility infrastructure systems.
  • Help ensure compliance with applicable Technical Safety Requirements (TSR).
  • Measure levels, pressures, temperatures, flow, and analytical processes.
  • Utilize test equipment to troubleshoot and analyze instrumentation related circuits. Troubleshoot and repair discreet component level failures which includes reading schematics, wiring diagrams, relay schedules; P & I Ds; operating Digital Volt Meters, signal generators, oscilloscope, current sources; and solder/de-solder discreet components and integrated circuits to industry standards.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) / Programmable Automatic Controllers (PAC) programs and associated Human Machine Interfaces (HMI) for industrial processes.
  • Interact with system engineers and nuclear facility operators to resolve problems.
  • Identify and lead efforts to improve work control procedures and maintenance processes to improve efficiency and safety. Participate in work order planning and walk downs as assigned.
  • Attend training as directed by the training coordinators and supervision.
  • Mentor junior staff and look for opportunities to involve them in current projects.
  • Depending on work location, may perform setup and operation of specialized equipment for ATR fuel element testing and prototype modeling for hardware surveillances.
  • May originate Electronic Change Requests (eCR) to existing Instrument procedures and Reactor Control and Instrument drawings. Review Detailed Operating Procedures (DOP), Work Orders (WO) and work requests.
  • Keep current standard lab calibration records on all test equipment.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

  • Level 2: High school or equivalent and 2 years related experience.
  • Level 3: High School or equivalent and 4 years related experience.
  • Obtain Radiological Worker qualification within 45 days of starting work and maintain qualification for duration of employment.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "Q" clearance, which requires US Citizenship.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have

  • Associate of Science degree in Instrumentation Engineering Technology, Electronics, Electrical Engineering Technology, Laser Technology preferred.
  • Vocational Certificate (such as but not limited to Process Instrumentation Control Vocational Certificate).

Job Information

  • The pay range for this position is: Level 2 ($26.36/hr - $43.48/hr) / Level 3 ($30.84/hr - $50.87/hr). At Idaho National Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials.
  • Multi-Level: This is a multi-level posting and you will be placed at the appropriate level dependent on depth and breadth of proven experience and skills.
  • TDP: This is a testing designated position; you will be required to submit to a pre-employment drug screen and periodic drug testing throughout the term of your employment.

Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this classification, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, bend, climb ladders, work at heights, and in confined spaces. The job requires hand/finger dexterity to keyboard or type, handle materials, manipulate tools, and reach with hands and arms. The job requires operation of job-related equipment and driving a vehicle. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds with assistance. Sufficient visual acuity and hearing capacity to perform the essential functions and interact with people is required.
