Job Description

Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Thermal-Hydraulic or Mechanical Analyst for Advanced Reactor Deployment to work on our team. This position would work normally assigned 9X80 schedule at our Research Education Campus with every other Friday off.

The Materials and Fuels Complex (MFC) at INL empowers the next generation of nuclear energy advances through hosting a unique combination of personnel, facilities, and infrastructure. MFC offers the ability to perform research and development of nuclear fuels and material from fuels design, development, and fabrication through to post-irradiation analysis.

As a Reactor Engineering Analyst, you will analyze thermal-hydraulics by system level codes or Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) or mechanical behavior by Finite Element Analysis (FEA) of advanced reactors demonstrations at INL. You will be responsible for delivering new reactor analyses, delivering confirmatory analyses to support design and product acceptance of new nuclear reactor systems, assisting in startup physics testing of advanced reactor, and supporting existing reactors.

Responsibilities

  • Supports, coordinates and performs confirmatory calculations and startup planning in area of technical expertise (e.g. accident analysis, thermal hydraulics, thermo-mechanical analysis) to support development of facility and reactor specific safety basis supporting analyses.
  • Work includes planning, scheduling, and tracking of reactor analyses and planning for startup testing and verification activities to validate analytical work and ensure safety.
  • Verify compliance of advanced reactor designs according to industry codes, such as ASME Boiler Pressure Vessel Code. Decompose project goals into defined and controlled design requirements.
  • Responsible for providing support to project and planning activities related to new reactor design and acceptance, talking to design and nuclear safety organizations, working with external reactor designers and DOE (ID and HQ), and contributing organizations (e.g. structural analysis, criticality safety, radiation protection, etc.).
  • Participate in the evaluation and resolution of complex engineering problems. Contribute to technical decisions based on sound engineering practices and in accordance with Laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Be the cognizant system engineer for reactor core components for advanced reactors deployed at that the Materials and Fuels Complex.

Minimum Requirements

  • Level 3:Bachelors Degree in Nuclear or Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or other related technical subject area 5 years relevant experience, or Advanced Degree in Nuclear or Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or other related masters degree with 2 years relevant experience. PhD and 2 years experience.
  • Level 4: Bachelors Degree in Nuclear or Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or other related technical subject area plus (Please fill in based on level requirements and 9 years relevant experience, or Advanced Degree in Nuclear or Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or other related degree with masters and 6 years relevant experience. PhD and 4 years experience.
  • Relevant experience includes nuclear reactor analysis in thermal-hydraulics or thermal-mechanical.
  • Relevant experience with software codes such as ANSYS, ABAQUAS, STAR-CCM , RELAP5, SAM, GOTHIC, NEK5000, or MOOSE tools.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "Q" clearance, which requires US Citizenship.

Job Information

  • The pay range for this position is: Level 3 ($95,256 - $195,288) / Level 4 ($114,360 - $234,336). At Idaho National Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials.
  • Multi-Level: This is a multi-level posting and you will be placed at the appropriate level dependent on depth and breadth of proven experience and skills.
  • TDP: This is a testing designated position; you will be required to submit to a pre-employment drug screen and periodic drug testing throughout the term of your employment.

Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this classification, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, bend, and work in an office and field/laboratory environment. The job requires hand/finger dexterity to keyboard or type, handle materials, manipulate tools, and reach with hands and arms. The job requires the operation of job-related equipment and driving a vehicle. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 35 pounds without assistance. Sufficient visual acuity and hearing capacity to perform the essential functions and interact with the public is required.
